Shuttle DS61 v1.1 vs NUC vc Zbox

Sun Jun 30, 2013 8:43 pm

Hello All,

Just picked up a Shuttle DS61 v1.1 for $184.99.

Does anybody have any experience with this setup? It seemed like a better way to go than the NUC or ZBOX.

Here are the guts:
Logitech Wireless Touch Keyboard K400 with Built-In Multi-Touch Touchpad $29.99
Kingston HyperX Plug n Play 8 GB Kit (2x4GB Modules) 1600MHz DDR3 SODIMM $75.74
Intel Network 6235AN.HMWWB Centrino WiFi Card Advanced-N 6235 Dual Band Bluetooth $21.95
Intel Core i3-3225 Dual-Core Processor 3.3 GHz 3 MB Cache LGA 1155 $129.99

Thank you,

Just make sure it supports Ivy Bridge out of the box if you're going 3225. Does seem like a faster option than the NUC, though at a bigger size and larger power draw. Shuttle at least used to be the king of those little SFF boxes. They seem to have been marginalized by mITX motherboards with fancy features and small, decent mITX cases. I haven't read a review of a Shuttle box in a long time, though as long as the quality hasn't dropped off it should be good enough. The i3 3225 is a pretty speed chip for a cool and quiet box.

The most recent SFF experience I have is with a Biostar iDEQ 200N, which was an nForce 2 system that I paired with a GeForce 5700. Pretty sweet little box for the time, though not really indicative of the current market.
I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.

I've built over a 100 shuttles over the years for friends, family and businesses so far so good. The occasional dead fan, or dead power supply after 3 or 4 years but nothing out of the ordinary. My main desktops are a XS35GT (Atom + ion) and SN95G5v3 (A64 + AGP).

I've not had a chance to play with DS61, but a friend runs a couple of DS47 as the controllers for the TVs in his Pub. The work fine, but might be a bit noisy if used as a home cinema.

It's a great little box! I am having trouble getting the system to see the Intel 6235. It doesn't show up in the device manager.
