New Build Computer Freezing

Sun Jun 19, 2016 12:03 pm

Hi, yesterday I build my father a budget gaming computer for Father's Day, with:

AMD A10 7860K APU
MSI A68H Grenade Motherboard
LEPA N600-SB 600w PSU
120GB Patriot Blast SSD
Patriot DDR3 8GB 1333MHz x 2 RAM
Enermax T40F-TB Universal CPU Cooler
Enermax Ostrog BR Case
windows 10 Home OS

So after I've built it. Installing the drivers were fine, and then while I was installing other thing, it gave me the BSOD ":(" twice,
the first one, I don't remember what it says.. something about "Thread Stuck"
the second one said "Unexpected Kernal Mode Trap"

And after the second ":(" , the computer starts to freeze up, and have lot's of weird lines going horizontal on the screen. And the lines don't move or anything, they just stays at the same position.

What does that mean? Is it because of Bad RAM? Bad Motherboard RAM Slot? Bad APU? Bad Motherboard Socket?

Please Advice ><!

Double check your cables. make sure everything is plugged in.

Most of the time my builds have been unstable because of ram. So the first thing I would do is pull one of the modules. The second is make sure it's at the min memory voltage and add just a bit of extra voltage. Normally .005 or .010 is enough to make a difference. Example ram dd3 stock 1.5 volt ram. I would set it to 1.505 or 1.510. However, having horizontal lines is definitely concerning and your issue might not be memory related.

(checking cable and making sure they are tight is always a good idea as well).

OK, first thing to do in this situation is to take everything out of the case.

1: Put the motherboard on top of the motherboard box
2: Mount CPU and heatsink/fan
3: Plug in one AND ONLY ONE stick of RAM. No drives, no video card, no nothing else. The only things on the motherboard are CPU/HSF and one stick of RAM
4: Plug the monitor to the VGA/DVI/HDMI port on the motherboard
5: Connect the power supply to the motherboard
6: If your motherboard has an on-board power switch, use it. Otherwise, just quickly jumper the two pins on the motherboard where the power switch plugs in.

Push go.

If you get the BIOS/UEFI screen and can play around in it, the mobo is not the problem. Add another component and repeat the above steps until you find the component causing the problems.

Others have already posted some good advice.

Could be almost anything, but the most likely culprit is RAM -- either a defective stick, or the timings are set too aggressively.

Should have added a CMOS reset to my step list for that exact reason.

di-do to what other have said. I think that APU supports ddr3-2133 ram. That 1333 ram could hinder performance, you may also want to see if you could exchange ram for 2133.

edit - not sure about W10, but can you go into advanced system settings - start up and recovery - and uncheck automatically restart?

At least if it blue screens you should get an error code to help trouble shoot.

So it turns out, it is because one of the RAM is bad. so just need to change that one, But I am going to return both.. and get a faster RAM 1866. 2x 8GB
