7870 not working in new Skylake build

Sun Mar 12, 2017 9:00 pm

So my hard drive died a few weeks ago on my old Core 2 Duo system. I was able to get my data off the failing drive. I decided it was time to upgrade. I bought a new 6700K and a MSI Z270PCmate, a sata ssd, some Corsair RAM, and a Be Silent case. I planned on reusing my old power supply and XFX 7870 graphics card and reusing my Win 7 key. The power supply is not very old and the graphics card is plenty fast for what I do and it has two DVI outputs that work with my dual monitors. After assembling everything (I used to build PCs for work, so this is not anything new), it would not post. I always start troubleshooting by pulling out the GPU, and bingo, it posts. I knew the GPU had been working fine in my old system (which has a working drive in it now and is fine) so I tested the GPU in the old system and it works just fine. I rechecked the bios settings in the new system, everything was right. I put the GPU back in the new system and it still will not post. I took out the GPU, updated the bios to the latest version, checked the bios settings again, and it still does not work. I tried a few different hardware combinations and bios settings and could not get it to work. Am I missing something? Any help would be great. I have emailed MSI but I doubt they will be helpful. They always assume I am an idiot and do not know what I am doing.

Is CSM turned on in the UEFI?

What is CSM and where would I find it? I just searched for it and didn't find it.

I found the problem. I went to Advanced Mode (F7) > Settings > Advanced > PCI Subsystem Settings > PEG0 - Max Link Speed and switched it to Gen2. Now it works.

IDK why it does not work in Gen 3 mode. the 7870 is a Gen 3 card? any insights?

I would have thought that to be the default config.

Auto is default. After I got it to work on Gen 2, I tried setting it to Gen 3 and that was a no go. I did not bother trying it on Gen 1 mode, whats the point if it at least works in Gen 2 mode. It would be nice to get it to work in Gen 3 mode because I was planning on getting an M2 SSD soon and I do not know if it sets all PCIe lanes to Gen 2 or just the ones going to the GPU. Anyone know anything about this?

It looks like HD 7xxx and GTX 6xx generation of GPUs had some issues working under PCIe 3.0 mode on some PCIe 3.0 boards.
Ivy Bridge i5-3570K@4.0Ghz, Gigabyte Z77X-UD3H, 2x4GiB of PC3-12800, EVGA 660Ti, Corsair CX-600 and Fractal Refined R4 (W). Kentsfield Q6600@3Ghz, HD 4850 2x2GiB PC2-6400, Gigabyte EP45-DS4P, OCZ Modstream 700W, and PC-7B.

It was definitely a faulty Motherboard. I got a different one and it works just fine.
