Need media bookcase/shelf suggestions

Mon Mar 27, 2017 10:36 am

Hi Gerbils!

I've moved into a new and smaller apartment in DC and need to find new ways to house my AV receiver and other electronics I connect to my TV. Before, All this stuff went in my TV stand, but I can't do that anymore since my TV is now mounted above a fireplace (that I rarely use - I know the risks, so no need to cover those bases). What I really want is a bookshelf/bookcase that has cutouts for an AV receiver and maybe even a reconfigured gaming PC (I may take the opportunity presented by an upgrade to Kaby Lake to move my gaming PC into my Silverstone GB05 case and put it with my receiver. Probably won't, but its an option). Since there's no other place to put it, my Subwoofer will have to go in front of this bookshelf. Don't even ask me about my L and R front speakers, I'm really dedicated to my surround sound even when a soundbar would clearly be the better aesthetic choice.

So, I'm looking for something tall (to help hide TV wires), deep enough for my AV receiver (Sony DN850) and narrow enough to fit between my desk and the wall (maybe 2 feet).

This bookshelf is pretty close, but it seems like my receiver will hang out over the edge of the shelves based on the customer photos.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

Thanks!

What is the maximum size (L x W x H) shelf that your space will support? I've been looking at additional bookshelves lately (my wife and I have a bit of a book addiction) so if I see something that would fit your space I'll be sure to let you know.

If that bookshelf uses a cheap fiberboard backer like most furniture in that price range, perhaps you could make a custom cutout on the shelf that will hold your A/V component(s) so that the receiver, and wiring, can exit more cleanly from the back?

Thing is, the AV receiver would still hang out over the edge, which I don't like. I feel like a bad bump, or one of DC's once in a century earthquakes would cost me $400 for a new receiver.

Thanks! Been a NOVA resident for 6 years, but finally decided I wasn't paying enough in state taxes and moved into the city. Living in NW is great though and I did find the absolute best deal in the city, bar none, for an apartment.

Don't know exactly, but the measurements for my receiver are:

15.67 x 19.61 x 8.94 in (Sony DN850), but of course there's an extra 1.5 inches in the back for the banana plugs, so that first measurement is really about 17inches.

I can manage a bit wider than that overall, and front to back isn't an issue, there's plenty of space.

Thanks for the help!

What height would you like the entire shelf to be? The shelf I use to hold my HTPC, TV and a bunch of books is only about 36 in tall. You mentioned that you would like something "tall", but how tall is "tall"?

Since my TV is hung on the wall, the wires come out the side. If possible, I want to try to hide those wires partially using the cabinet, so I'd say about 5 feet tall ideally. My other option is to just get the plastic things that conceal wires and use that instead.

What 36 inch one do you use?

The one I currently use is quite wide (~60in) and is also much shallower than your requirements (~14in) so it wouldn't work well for your use case. My mini-ITX HTPC build though fits quite nicely and my TV's base barely fits on the top.

However, I am in the process of purchasing a new house. The area that will be my wife and I's office is a bonus room with the walls only going up ~66in before they start to taper in (the area is a bonus room over the garage). Therefore, I am looking for new shelves that will fit that height so the 5ft requirement matches my searches quite well. I haven't been able to do much searching since your original post but I plan on doing more looking tonight. I will see if I find anything that fits your needs.

I actually got my tape measure out (correction, I first bought a tape measure) and measured my receiver. It's actually only 17 inches wide and 14.5 inches deep (including the space that the banana plugs take up). Much smaller than the specs listed on Amazon.

This opens up a whole bunch of extra options I thought were closed off.

That does open up a lot more options! What do think of something like this: Veer 63" Standard Bookcase?

It would work, its just too light for my existing furniture. Something like https://www.wayfair.com/South-Shore-Cit ... H1927.html is probably what I will end up with since its tall and has room for tons of other stuff besides the receiver.

Go to Wayfair.com and do your own shopping. I can pretty much guarantee you that nobody is going to be able to pick out a piece of furniture for you better than you can yourself.

I was having trouble before since the measurements amazon had for my receiver were off by a couple inches, so nothing seemed to be big enough. A lot easier now that I'm not trying to fins 19 inch wide shelves.

I wish that one had the dimensioned drawing showing the size of the openings. I've been disappointed by several bookshelves that the shelves were not near as deep as the overall dimensions would have suggested.
