Am I crazy to buy a friends used parts?

Fri Jun 30, 2017 12:50 pm

My friend just upgraded his system to a new I7-7700K which meant a new motherboard and memory as well. He offered me most of his old parts for $300. Its basically identical to my primary system and the parts will be used for my wife, son, daughter as a secondary system.

So for $300 I get:
I7-4770K cpu
MSI Z87 G45 mobo
32gb of 1600 DDR3
500w power supplier (cooler master, corsair or EVGA cant remember)

I think the $300 is fair for the cpu and memory alone, and the mobo and power supply is kind of a throw in. Am I crazy it seems pretty fair, let me know.

PS: I know he tried overclocking it once or twice but never ran a overclock for long periods or did any kind of mining with the system.

Looks like a good deal to me. I see no problems.

As long as you don't have any reason to believe he's trying to rip you off or get rid of known bad parts I think this is much better than an eBay or craigslist transaction. That memory alone is probably worth a pretty penny these days. Still plenty of life in that platform, although a Z97 board might be preferable but as a secondary system I think it would be great. Throw an SSD and a GPU at it and it's still pretty close to top of the line for most tasks.

Heck, I'd give you 400 for that.

edit: and to be clear, feel like it was good bargain.

Thanks for confirming my belief it was a very fair deal. I recognize the parts are 3-4 years old as he built his system 2-3 months after I built mine some time in early 2014 or so. But i'm still very happy with my systems performance overall. Also he is a very close friend so I know he did not abuse the hardware just a lot of heavy gaming. The maniac bought two Geforce 980TIs right before nvidia released the 10XX cards.

Yeah, it's a *very* nice deal, especially since you know the guy so all the normal concerns of fraud, damage/abuse, misrepresentation, etc... aren't really in play.

I mean, 32gigs of 1600 RAM, even at 4x8, is still on high side of ~200 USD by itself.

If you're feeling unsure about the ethics I'll buy those parts off you for $300 ;)

I bought just that CPU new in a great Newegg deal for about $289 a few years back; so overall it's a pretty sweet deal. You can overclock that chip and it should be good for most anything you throw at it.

I think it's pretty fine. You help your friend get rid of the parts he no longer need while you help save your old computer stuff. This is very environmental friendly too.

But your sig says 16GB RAM. Or did you buy another identical set of components only with twice the memory. That would be crazy unless you're doing a build for someone else.

Very good. Just keep an eye on the older PSU.

Like Kretschmer says, the PSU is the only component that I would hesitate about -- it could be fine, but if there's anything that could go through normal non-abusive wear and tear it's the PSU.

The rest sounds like a good basis for a secondary system.

I got the 2nd I7-4770k system up and running for my wife about 6 weeks ago. Her old system a Phenom II 1090T was shifted over to my son and daughter is now our 3rd system. The only problem was I paid $300 for the parts, but needed to spend another $350 for a new 24" Display, a Samsung EVO 500gb ssd(this went into my primary system and my 240gb moved to the 2nd system), Mouse, Keyboard, Power Strip, 2.5 to 3.5 mounting brackets, etc. So really the system cost me about $650 to get up and running.

The reason my primary system still has 16gb is because it's running its 2400 DDR3, I took the 32gb of DDR3 1600 got from him and split it between the 2nd and 3rd computers so all 3 now have 16gb of ram. The Phenom II had 2 X 4GB before the upgrade.

If I knew you two, I wouldn't have recommended the transaction, instead I'd have offered your friend about $320 for all.
