HP 551n Upgrade to HP 551dn

Thu Jul 20, 2017 4:36 pm

I have an HP 551n (p/n CF081A) non-duplex laser printer and would like to modify it to become an HP 551dn (p/n CF082A), which is the duplex version of this printer series. Does anyone know if this is possible, and if so, how I could go about getting it done?

Thanks!

I looked into this for some recent HP laser model and the modifications needed went far beyond "just install a duplexing unit." I don't know if the old 4350 series or even the P4015/P4515 series was any easier, but looking at a service manual it seemed like there are duplex specific belts, gears, and other assemblies that are )1 non-trivial to install and 2) non-trivial to even source.

I think by the time you buy the parts and fumble through installing them, it will have been cheaper to just buy the dn unit outright as the "upgrade". We did that at work and gave the other unit to someone else who didn't need duplexing.

Hi Scrotos,

Thanks for your reply. I was thinking this might be the case, although I was hoping a simple 'slap-on' duplexer would be possible. You are definitely correct suggesting the purchase of a printer that has that feature built-in.
