Need expert help on first computer build (1)

Fri Nov 10, 2017 5:29 am

Hello Every one! I am planning to build my first costum computer from scratch and I am having a hell of a time with it.

The primary focus of this is just using the Photoshop CC, and pro Evolution Soccer 2018 gaming on 1080p 60hz ips monitor.

I have two plans, and this is the first one:

1. Intel Core i3-7350K.
2. ASUS Strix B250F Gaming
3. COOLER MASTER HYPER 212 EVO.
4. Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1050 Ti G1 Gaming (?????)
5.Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 black.?????????
6. Samsung 850 EVO 500GB 2.5" SSD
7.Seasonic Focus+ 550W 85+ GOLD PSU
ATX 12V, 85 Plus Gold, Modular, 2x 6+2pin PCIe, 1x CPU, 6x SATA
8. Cooler Master MasterCase 3 Pro.

I can't choose the best reasonable Ram speed for this build! I am confused between three options: 2400 mhz 8 GB, 2133 16 GB, or 2400 16 GB. I need your help to choose the best option can match with this build.
What do you think about the GPU? Can I go with GTX 1060 6GB without any issues?

For your use case, the speed of the RAM won't matter that much. Photoshop likes to have a lot of RAM though, especially if you are working with large images or complex filters, so going with 16GB would be much better than 8 GB. Depending on how large your images are you may even want to look at 32 GB.

The 1060 is a more powerful video card than the 1050 TI, so anything the 1050 TI can do the 1060 will do better.
Main System: i7-8700K, ASUS ROG STRIX Z370-E, 16 GB DDR4 3200 RAM, ASUS 6800XT, 1 TB WD_Black SN750, Corsair 550D

I would recommend going from the i3 to an i5.
Intel i7-7700, MSI Trident, 32GB DDR4 2133mhz, Geforce 1060GTX, and Samsung Evo 1TB.

Yes! I know that the i5 better than i3, but I am wandered about the of single core... the speed of single core in i3 7350k is 4,2 GHz... I am so confused... maybe I will buy pre-build pc, like an Acer Aspire GX-781 (GeForce GTX1050Ti,Core i5-7400,8GB RAM,256GB SSD,DVD±RW,WiFi,Win 10 Home) ... I don't know:/ ... really I am confused

Photoshop reacts well to more cores, so you generally would get more benefit from having more cores than a single fast core.

You may also want to look at a RyZen system -- for similar money, you can get more CPU cores which would help in Photoshop. (If you were more focused on gaming Intel would make more sense, but since you mentioned Photoshop first I'm assuming that's more important.)

GTX1050 < RX560 < GTX 1050Ti << RX570
GTX 1060 6GB = RX 580 8GB (this tier sounds like overkill for your needs)

Is there a reason you prefer an ATX mobo and case instead of a smaller mATX (or even mITX) mobo and case?

[Add] I should also caution you that (historically) when someone asks for build advice for photoshop, recommendations generally tend to assume you're the most advanced photoshopper that's ever walked the earth. If you're a "casual" photo editor, take recommendations with a grain of salt. One of my buddies is a graphic designer and his Ivy Bridge i5 laptop (2C/4T) and whatever flavor of mobile nvidia GPU was common in $600 laptops back then still works fine for his needs. No complaints.

What's the reasoning behind your choice of an i3-7350K? Just an FYI, the new i3-8100 is 4C/4T

I ask these questions because I know you're working on a 2nd more powerful build. I assume that there's a set budget that's shared between the two builds, so any money that's saved/spent on one build is added/subtracted from the other?

Yes! In first build I will work with Photoshop/illustrator on 1080p... but in second one I will work on 2160p .... I prefer the first... I don't need to think a lot about the future ... I can learn and develop my career with first build .... but I need to make it smarter more and as faster more ... I have chosen this motherboard because I read that it one of best non overlooking motherboard... just I need to build fastest pc using i3 7350k :)

Well, the Asus Strix B250F Gaming is certainly one of the most expensive non-overclocking mobos on the market.... but what features does that get you over a more commonly priced B250/H270 board in the $90 range?

When overclocking isn't on the table, you pick out a mobo that offers the features you NEED, and you pick the mobo manufacturer based on BIOS preference.

This. There are a lot of better options in that price range. But the simple answer is "go with a i5 unless you need the fastest possible single-thread performance and don't want an i7".

EDIT: So a typical 7350K is running about $170 US. For that price you could also get:
1) A Ryzen 1500X with two more real cores (and HT)
2) For $140 you could get a i3-8100 with two more cores (non HT)

If you any suggestions to make my build better and faster.... plz let me know;)

The i3-8350K is the same price, has the same # of cores (4C/4T), and actually has a higher frequency than the i5-7600K. FYI. Not sure why you're so committed to previous gen CPUs.

here's a comparison of the features of the Asus B250F gaming and a couple mATX Z370 boards. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but if you go anything except Z-series mobos, you wont be able to run your RAM any higher than 2400MHz.

If you're dead-set in getting that B250 board, then that makes your choice pretty easy. Just narrow down your search in newegg for a 2400MHz kit and pick the cheapest one you like.

If you are doing a new build, and from the sound of what you will be doing, and if you will be moving on to more advanced stuff later on, then you are better off just getting a i5-8400 with 32GB of DDR4-2666 and don't overclock if you doing any type of professional work with this build.
Personally I wouldn't go with anything less then four cores at this point unless it was for a budget machine.

This would qualify under my previous caution of advice for SERIOUS photoshop usage. While I certainly wouldn't argue against a 6C/6T i5-8400, you are in the process of building a second (better) system also. At some point, your two systems are going to be basically the same if you keep raising the (budget) bar.
And don't feel like you need 32GB of RAM right away, but 2x8GB kit will allow you to double up if/when you need to.
I haven't seen that you've commented yet about your usage. I assume you're in either the beginner or casual photoshop groups, since I'd imagine most "pro" photoshop users would have a rough idea of the system requirements they need.

If the OP is planning on using this build to make some money on the side or as part of his livelihood then building another system for gaming sounds like a good idea.

Speaking from having used Photoshop, and Lightroom (now Lightroom Classic i.e. Lightroom the full version) far more, 16GB is fine. The software will also utilize whatever resources you can throw at it- cores, clockspeed, all of it. And for this kind of stuff, real cores trumps virtual hyperthreaded cores, so the 6C6T version would definitely be my recommendation.

Where you'd want more: video. You have to do a lot of work, shoot hundreds of frames, to really bog down LR; or try to combine dozens with various types of bracketing (focus, exposure, stitching) to really bump up against 16GB and make the CPU squeal for a significant period of time.

But video processing will have you waiting until after dinner, and it'll hit storage too; and if you hit the RAM ceiling? Stop talking about percents slower, and start multiplying by integer factors...

There have been some pretty good deal of late (Black Friday and so on). If you are going with a 1050 I suggest you go with a 1050ti. The problem though is the prices of video cards are still very high and I do not see anything to stop it at this moment.

Good luck with your build.
