Moniter goes black after startup

Mon Nov 20, 2017 4:50 pm

I just installed a new hdd since my last one started to fail and after reinstalling Windows my main moniter goes blank after start up even though I can access bios and the motherboard name on start up appears. After plugging in my old hard drive my computer starts up normally and the moniter works again.

Sounds like the new Windows install didn't "take". Did it ever come up on the new install, or did you get the blank screen on first reboot?

It never did but I have a second moniter plugged in that uses a vga connection (the one that doesn't work Is hdmi) which works perfectly. Everything else on the computer is running fine.

Installed the latest drivers for your GPU?

Is the other monitor showing up in the Display Settings? Or is it like the OS does not see it at all?

It is showing up and I can do things on it but the display is just black like if it was completely off.

Since you can access Display Settings, you might want to verify that Windows is not trying to output some combination of resolution and refresh rate that the monitor cannot handle.

The resolution is set to the native resolution for the monitor and the refresh rate is 60hz while the monitor is 144hz

Can you run the monitor that is black off of the vga port?

I want to confirm the monitor is in ok working condition after the first couple minutes of use.

I had a really old lcd that would display the bios on screen but then appeared to go to sleep mode after the machine booted.
Turned out it did that on every computer it was connected to. The majick smoke came out during testing on other machines.

Can you connect your video card to your monitor via DVI instead of HDMI to verify that your new Windows install is not doing something weird with the HDMI port?
