Toner

Thu Jan 25, 2018 4:05 pm

Hello All,

I know i've seen a few threads where people have said they use off brand toner without issue. I have a brother HL-3170CDW color laser printer. We bought it about a year ago and it has been a life saver especially since my wife prints 50-100 pages a week while taking online classes. I replaced the black toner about 2 months ago and just bit the bullet and bought a brother replacement toner. Well now 2 of the 3 color cartridges are low and they are about $70 each, $57 if we buy online and have them shipped. My question for my fellow TR people is: what kind and where do you get your toner?

Thanks,

First off, you do know how to reset the toner page counts? The printer goes by page count, not actual toner levels, so there's plenty of toner life left after the printer says otherwise. Reset for your printer HERE.

As for off-brand toner, I buy whatever's cheap on Amazon (HL-3045 here, so TN-210 carts).
What we have today is way too much pluribus and not enough unum.

I've had reasonably good luck with Rosewill toner carts for my Brother DCP-7065DN.

At home we don't print that much, so I just buy the name brand for the brother laser and move on. We do usually go to staples and have them price match - 10% the cheapest online price though.

We did the reset for the black toner and got a few 100 more pages out of it before it started to fade and replaced it. I did reset it the count again when the yellow page count warning triggered. But I didn't realize when my wife told me it stopped working again magenta triggered as well. I reset magenta counter and now we are cruising along again.
