His most frequent computer problem is the BSOD. Obviously I help him troubleshoot, and I've even taken his machines home with me, tested them relentlessly and found no problems. Then I give it back and it BSODs. I had come to the conclusion that the crashes were stemming from electrical issues in his apartment, but despite me suggesting a UPS multiple times, he never got one, and now he doesn't live there anymore. I'm still keeping that theory in the back of my mind to see if he has problems at his new place.

I don't want to use any of their stuff again, but I may have to if I want to swap over my drives and keep my data intact, this time it will be a ~$200 model though.

HP is schizophrenic. Their laptops aimed at general consumers can be pretty awful, but their business stuff (e.g. EliteBook) are generally decent. My personal laptop (which is getting pretty long in the tooth but still meets my needs) is an EliteBook I purchased a few years back as a refurb, and upgraded with additional RAM and an SSD.
