My brother has the WORST luck with computers. He's owned....6 computers (laptop/desktop) and I think all but 2 have had some sort of persistent problem. His most frequent computer problem is the BSOD. Obviously I help him troubleshoot, and I've even taken his machines home with me, tested them relentlessly and found no problems. Then I give it back and it BSODs. I had come to the conclusion that the crashes were stemming from electrical issues in his apartment, but despite me suggesting a UPS multiple times, he never got one, and now he doesn't live there anymore. I'm still keeping that theory in the back of my mind to see if he has problems at his new place.

HTPC: A8-5600K, MSI FM2-A75IA-E53, 4TB Seagate SSHD, 8GB 1866MHz G.Skill, Crosley D-25 Case Mod

Well at least share with us what it is so maybe we can avoid it too.

We've got a 40 year old furnace I think is causing issues but I can't be sure, since most of my equipment is working fine. Just the new stuff I've had terrible luck with.

We're replacing the damn thing shortly so it's all good there, but if I have any more weird problems I'm sure I'll have to look into it.

Alright replacement seems to be working fine. So at least it's all good now.

The only thing I really like about BB is how easy it is to replace something that isn't working right.

As for what, it's an HP which I know is your first clue something will be wrong, but

And yeah, I know, it's a bit of a weird buy. I just wanted something I could grab and take home and their selection was kinda iffy.

My last laptop hard drive was an embarrassment to the entire universe. This one actually feels pretty good.

Heh.

Hmm. Wasn't really surprised, but a bit noisier than I prefer in gaming. Ordered a laptop cooler to lower that.

I've got no real issue with HP, but I definitely would not have bought that laptop for myself. Hope it works alright for you.

PC's ok, my synology ds712+ ($500) nas died after 4 years of very light use, i get the dreaded "Configuration Lost"

changed cmos battery, nothing.

I don't want to use any of their stuff again, but I may have to if I want to swap over my drives and keep my data intact, this time it will be a ~$200 model though.

HP is schizophrenic. Their laptops aimed at general consumers can be pretty awful, but their business stuff (e.g. EliteBook) are generally decent. My personal laptop (which is getting pretty long in the tooth but still meets my needs) is an EliteBook I purchased a few years back as a refurb, and upgraded with additional RAM and an SSD.

You may be able to recover the data by using a Linux PC

This matches my experience as well. I had very little respect for HP until taking my current job with a company that was until very recently an HP shop. The 4-5 generations of Elitebooks and workstations I've dealt with have all been rock solid, easy to service, and visually attractive to boot. I'd probably still go with a Thinkpad or Precision if it was my money on the line, but I must admit I'm rethinking the vow I made back around 2007 to never again buy an HP laptop.

I don't love HP but when I'm buying I never seem to find a better option.

Should I be buying online? Probably, didn't feel like it this time. Should I switch to ASUS or MSI? Probably. Eh.

It is what it is, and it's doing what I need it to (as I said, a bit too noisy in heavy use until I get that laptop cooler.)

Hopefully I get my desktop back up and running this month since I'm ready to RMA the mobo. I just got a vehicle again so when I want to go places I don't have to think about it anymore, except for the snowstorm that just went through. :p
