Oculus bricks all Rifts connected to PC's!!

Wed Mar 07, 2018 12:45 pm

It seems there is a "small" bug in Oculus' systems that just broke any Rift connected to a PC: https://twitter.com/natemitchell/status ... 4982705152.

They all call home, and the certificate that it's a valid Rift contained a hard-coded date that just passed.

Oculus says they are working on it.

Not sure "bricks" is the right term to use. It'll be fixed quickly I'm sure. Not ideal, but also not really a big deal IMO.

It isn't, I fully agree, but instead of meaning "It's a brick now" (i.e. that without hardware modification it's non-functional forever) it's expanded to things like "it won't boot unless I do x,y,z with software or buttons".

Then it expanded to "it did something weird or gave an error!"

Which is ridiculous, but it's how it's used now.

Yeah for me "bricked" always meant "I'm going to need a soldering iron and a multimeter to fix this"

Or "He's dead, Jim" (as in, unfixable even with a soldering iron).
Nostalgia isn't what it used to be.

+1. No magic smoke, no brick.

Depending on which component lost its magic smoke, it may still be fixable with a soldering iron. Fried VRM MOSFET, exploded capacitors, or vaporized trace on an outer PCB layer = go for it. Fried SoC in a surface mount BGA package = brick!

So Rift shipped with hardware DRM? I have to admit, I loled. This kind of thing is where the log cabin test came from.

Personally, I define bricking as "no longer functional through standard user interaction" which leaves the door open to developer tools in addition to hardware modification.
