Xbox One X - Display corruption/flickering at 4K fix?

Sat May 19, 2018 11:18 am

To better describe my issue, I captured a video of my problem here: https://youtu.be/50m_Ddq_AW4

I'm wondering if any of you technical ppl here know what's causing this, and how I may fix it? The problem goes away if I choose 1080P on the Xbox, this display flickering and the blue lines only happens at 4K. I'm using a HDMI 2.0 cable from the console to the monitor, and the monitor works fine with other sources at native res over HDMI and DP.

Have you tried swapping the cable. I generally see this because the cable isn't good enough or bad.

Yeah, cable swap was first thing I did but it hasn't helped. The HDMI 2.0 cables I have are heavily shielded, very thick and don't bend easy. I won't rule it out, but I've also used the same cable shoved into my 1070's, and 4K/60 display perfectly with it?

Looks like symptoms of a marginal HDMI signal to me. Could be cable, could be a problem with the console output.

Any chance you can try on someone else's 4K display using the same cable, to see if the problem persists?

How long is the cable (and if it is a long one, try a shorter one).

I'd be making sure the power cable to the X is secure, toying with the 4k settings on the box then asking Samsung and MS about it. I've heard about it happening before though I can't recall if there was any specific cause.

In case of hardware issues if there's an MS store near you can usually do same day replacement from what I've heard.

Thanks for the ideas JBI and LostCat . I've had a chance to try some things and I have fixed the problem (I used a shorter HDMI lead from the Xbox to Monitor) by relocating the Xbox for now.

But I'm also confused, because my longer cable I was using (5 Meters) is preferred for a tidy cable run. On the Xbox this longer cable exhibits display corruption as we know, but when using a PC with that exact same cable it's fine? This logically tells me the cable is actually ok, as is the Monitor and the Xbox. Does the Xbox output a weaker signal then, as I'm struggling to understand why a longer cable don't work with it when it does with everything else?

According to Wikipedia, 4K at 60Hz is 14Gb/s and you are trying to drive that down a 5m cable. There's a whole bunch of signal integrity engineers who just curled up in to a little ball and started weeping after reading that! Slight variations in signal drive strength between the Xbox and the PC, or differences in trace layout between the connector and the chip will be enough to cause this kind of problem.

FYI, it's not necessarily the case of the Xbox being too weak to drive the cable. The signal drive strength must be carefully tuned to get a good eye diagram at the receiver. If you drive the signals too hot then you get all kinds of nasty overshoot, ringing and other nasties.

I'm just a software developer but I've had tables of drive strength and sensitivity given to me by signal integrity engineers to program in to high speed SerDes to get things to work.

I've never used one so I can't say from personal experience, but you may be able to solve the problem for your preferred cable run by using two (known good) 3m cables and a cheap repeater / extender like this.

With a 5m passive cable (presumably that's what you have?) you're getting to the point where signal quality will likely be marginal for a 4K signal. Minor variations in the design of the HDMI transceivers on the sending side may push it over the edge.

You either need to rearrange your setup to put the console closer to the display, or step up to an active cable.

hi guys I just figured out (in my case) why it was flickering.

I'm using a pioneer 7.2 receiver (4k) with benq 4k projector.

By default the display color is set to be 8bit in xbox, and i changed it to 12bit it just fixed it. my guess is benq requires 12bit color space however the source is 8bit so when the color wheel spins it causes random flickering. i could be wrong but this is how it fixed my issue.

I was able to fix this by turning off HDR deep color mode for the hdmi input of my tv. Hope it helps.

I can't say out of personal experience but you can try any of the cables either 3m or 5m based on the signal you want to transfer.

Not sure if this is the issue I had, but I had some lines flicker on my screen. I had my Colour Depth set to 12-bit. So I put mine down to 10-bit and it stopped flickering with lines. See if this works.
