Luckily he uses it for solitaire, look up parts, email, and book keeping is done in a spreadsheet in open office.

I'll get him setup with a windows 10, core i5, 16gb ram, 240gb ssd and an external usb drive for automatic backup of his spreadsheets.

Confirm if his parts database is on the web or local. By hearsay I heard a a similar use case requiring a >700GB SSD. Not terrible in terms of cost difference but something to check.

He is getting parts from rock auto etc.
It is not a local database.

I checked and believe me the spreadsheet is the most processor intensive thing there besides the web.

Getting the MS solitaire pack will blow his mind! :D

The $#!* adverts within the Windows 10 version might well do.

As might the £1.69 a month to not have them annoying him

How many Windows 10 users actually pay money not to have these $#!* adverts.

Personally, I stopped playing Solitaire and felt slightly sad and quite anti-Microsoft about it.

Microsoft apparently wants to tax Solitaire players, and the tax doesn't even remove ads from the mobile version if you have it, just the Windows one. I would have paid £2 for a perpetual ad-free experience, cross-platofm including my iPhone, without grumbling, and maybe £5-10 with some grumbling. But the decision-makers at Microsoft apparently want people to pay and pay and pay again for Windows' included noddy games now, and/or dislike the company even more. Why would I pay this subscription when I can get a pretty decent casual game on Steam every 2 months for £3.50 and not feel bad for doing so??

Considering that Steam does has actual free games, it doesn't even make sense to anyone to pay Microsoft for these types of casual games anyway.

Plenty of people don't have Steam, and don't think of themselves as gamers (or even think playing PC games is a silly waste of time) but still play Minesweeper or Solitaire fairly often. Quite a few of these are older folks, they're not going to change their ways easily.

Microsoft went OTT on advertising within those games, and priced the 'out' from this too high, such that I know a few people who were playing them almost daily but actively stopped playing and made negative comments about Microsoft following their moves from earlier versions of Windows to Windows 10.

These same people are all now playing stupid games on Facebook, while thinking they're not gaming, and Microsoft's attempt has sent the advertising money straight to their (even more obnoxious) rival. Big fail.

My Dad current wife does this, plays Facebook games. Not that I will ever have a Facebook account to begin with.
