Fix stripped rack mount holes

Sat Sep 18, 2021 11:38 am

We have multiple racks that come with the predrilled holes that in normal fashion are now stripped. We are replacing equipment and I would prefer to replace the whole rack, but I was tasked to find an alternative. Does anyone have good or bad experience retapping these hole to reuse? Unfortunately through multiple generations of not replacing we can't shift down to good holes and the racks are full.

I can't believe I'm actually posting here but: yes, retapping is usually easy, but you will want to jump up a size. I recommend switching your screw color as well so its clear: if you have black ones now, use stainless ones for the tapped holes. That will help everyone differentiate between the two sizes.
