Laptop suddenly freezes

Wed Aug 24, 2022 8:17 am

Hi, I have an issue I hope I could receive some help with. I have a laptop Asus ROG with 5800H, 16 GB RAM, 1 TB SSD and RTX 3060 which is experiencing occasional Windows freezes (both mouse and keyboard become unresponsive and the laptop has to be shut down from the power button). The frequency for these events is between several days and several weeks. All the advices I found on the Internet basically amount to take the entire software apart, which is not exactly helpful in this case. Is there a way to better identify what is causing these freezes? (I tried to look into the Event viewer, but I saw no suspicious error messages at the moment when the freezes occurred).

I'd let it sit a for a while to see if it resolves itself after a minute or 5.

Is the computer fully stuck, or only no response to user input?

Does it happen both when connected and disconnected from power?

Normally I'd try booting another OS to see if it happens there (Ubuntu from USB), but since it's at least a few days between occurrences, that could be difficult to do.

It does not.

I believe it is no response to user input.

The laptop is always connected to power.

But continues to chug along otherwise? That's strange.

What happens with internal vs USB vs Bluetooth mouse/keyboard?

Could you be a bit more specific? What do you mean by "chug along"?

I think I might have some suspicions about what could cause this: I suddenly recalled that, when I originally installed my OS, the driver for wireless did not install automatically through the Windows Update, but I had to search it on the web and download it manually. It might be that it was a faulty driver, because, if I am not mistaken, the Windows freezes occurred when the laptop was not connected to the internet by cable.

The fact that it didn't auto-install doesn't mean it's faulty now. And drivers are signed nowadays so not very likely to be corrupt.
But it's easy to try to another driver, so no harm in trying.

You said above that it's not fully stuck, only stops responding to input.
That is, any processing, audio playing, files copying... continue.
