motherboard/CPU temp software

Fri Aug 12, 2005 11:49 pm

About every brand motherboard comes with a software utility to read the temperature of the CPU and case. These temps are usually way off... usually way too low.

Is there are general rule of thumb of how many degrees to add to the temperature reported by the software to get an accurate read?

A good friend of mine told me about 5-10C. I agree, but wanted other people's thoughts.

I think it varies to greatly to put down a general number like 5-10c.

Most read off of a diod under the CPU socket, so it dosent actually read CPU temp, but rather air temp under the CPU.

On my Koolance case, I fished the temp probe under the socket and taped it to the bottom the CPU and it was only 5-8c off from the mother board diod(the mother board diod being reading cooler).

I think until they build a CPU that sends out it's own temp data, it will always be a guessing game.

Here's a method to calibrate your CPU temp sensor. My Abit motherboard came out reading 9.6C high, which is consistent with this test comparing Asus and Abit temps.
