New cards from Matrox

Tue Apr 15, 2003 8:40 pm

I thought that this might give this forum some life...
Matrox is planning to release a couple of new cards. The story is at Xbit labs.

A cheap Parhelia might tempt me.

Apparently they'll be slower than the original Parhelia. Hmm, don't think I'll be shifting attention from the ATi and nVidia forums anytime soon.

Matrox: Proof that privately owned companies don't die, they just sideline themselves ever further into obscurity.

I have an old matrox millenium 8 meg PCI card in one of my old boxes, I wonder if the new card will be faster than that one.

Shifting Focus

Thu May 01, 2003 2:08 am

My first 3D card was a Matrox Mystique (4MB). Then I got a Voodoo 1 and never bought a Matrox card again. Looking at their website, it appears that they've just shifted their focus away from the gaming market in favor of applications like medical imaging. There are quite a few graphics card compaines still in business that we don't hear much about: NeoMagic, Trident, etc. They must be finding a niche somewhere.

Why doesn't 3dfx do that.

....Because they went out of business over 2 years ago. One of their biggest mistakes was that they decided to produce there own cards, which immediately turned all their immediate 3rd party allies against them.

Read the review and am impressed.
I think the P650 would be good for 2 17" LCD screens. Ho ho ho. Now if only I could afford the card, not to mention TWO 17" LCD screens. :(

Any word on pricing?
