SLI fail, Z68 PCIe 3.0 board + 650TI boost 1gb & 2gb.

Wed Jan 29, 2014 3:53 am

Hello TR -

I don't spend too much time on the forums but have lurked for about a decade. Hi!

Problem: I have two 650 Ti Boost cards which are not activating in SLI mode. More details below.

I'm hoping that someone has ran into a similar issue that I am dealing with right now. I purchased a second 650 Ti Boost 2GB to pair with my 650 Ti Boost 1GB (I know not optimal, but I run most games @ 720 with all candy cranked as I sit 8-9FT away from my TV) and have not been able to get the NVidia control panel to show the SLI options in the "Configure Surround, PhysX" menu.

I've done the normal stuff:

* Checked SLI bridge (make sure it's seated on each card)
* Switch to different SLI bridge (I have a "floppy" kind and a "PCB" kind... both don't seem to do the trick)
* Swapped cards between slots (MB is PCIe 16x, 16x4, 16x8 from top to bottom and I realize that SLI requires 16x and 8x so the 4x is out of the question)
* Uninstall/Re-install drivers (All the way up to beta 334.67)
* Unplugged absolutely everything except for the Video Cards, USB for wireless KB/mouse combo, and boot hard drive to rule out some other device causing a conflict (this includes all internal headers).
* Loaded BIOS defaults
* Reinstalled OS (Windows 8.1)
* Prayed it would just work itself out and ignored the damn thing for a week.

...needless to say still not getting SLI options in the Nvidia control panel. http://imgur.com/HQdET1P

Quick specs:
Gigabyte Z68MA-D2H-B3 Rev 1.3 BIOS U1C (Latest UEFI release)
i5-2300 with i5-2500K cooler (I've also tried an i3 and Pentium G3xxx just to make extra sure it was not some sort of crazy bad CPU thing)
Video cards as mentioned.
Boot drive is SSD Kingston V300
Antec TruePower Blue 750
The other odds and ends, BluRay drive, other HD for DVR, Xonar U3, etc.

Card info from GPU-Z validate (prior to beta NVidia driver update)

It sounds like 650Ti have different video BIOS versions which might be the reason why it fails to unlock itself. It could also be that you have two different "650Ti" chips. The 2GiB 650Ti having more blocks enabled versus 1GiB. SLI can only work with silicon that has matching shader units, memory bus, TMU etc.

It looks like the specs he posted have the same ROPs, shaders, membus, etc.... weird.

I want to say it's because of the memory mismatch, but I've read that that's not true and that both cards should be limited to the smaller amount (i.e. the 2gb 650Ti will act as though it only has 1gb).

I've run GTX 670 SLI with 2 different clock settings from 2 different vendors (EVGA 670 FTW 1006 base, PNY 670 Enthusiast 915 base) on 2 different motherboards / cpu (EVGA P55 FTW / i5 750 @ 4GHz, ASRock x79 Extreme4 / i7 3820 @ 4.4 GHz) and no problem.

That's a really strange issue, hope you get it sorted out!

The only thing that could prevent SLI from working at this point is some stupid motherboard BIOS or video BIOS issue on one of the cards.

It certainly isn't a resource issue, otherwise the second card would have problems POSTing or working. Power and thermal issues are out of the question, because you would be able to do SLI but it would do CTDs and BSODs.

Edit: Is there any mointors plugged into the second card? IIRC, SLI/CF disables output on the slave units and you must plug the monitors into the master unit in order for it work correctly.

Thanks for the responses. At least I don't feel like I am missing a painfully obvious thing.

The only other "hard" SLI failures I have been able to find via web is when a MB is bad. I'm going to pick up a replacement this weekend and see what happens.

Again, thanks!

What Krogoth said....but i doubt that is the problem since it is hooked to just your TV from what I have read.

Are you installing both cards at the same time?? If you are I suggest you install a single 1gb card as the master then booth up the system with the single card and make sure everything works. Then shut down the system and install the 2nd card with the SLI bridge connector.
Then restart the system see if the system sees the second card now. I also rec you use the latest drivers.

Before you begin using driver sweeper to remove all Nvidia based drivers before you begin might be a good Idea.

Good luck this is where I would start.

If all else fails you could always get another 2gb 650ti boost card of the same brand you own and sell your 1gb card if you cannot get it working. That is if you can get a identical card for cheap enough that you will not spend much $ at all once you sell your other 650 boost to someone. This is a last resort unless you want a 2gb frame buffer over a small 1gb frame buffer.

I had a 1 GB frame buffer with my SLI EVGA 560 ti Superclocked cards and the memory was pretty much always used up to the max @1080p. Now that I have a EVGA GTX 770 CLASSIFIED 4GB card and I am Duck Dynasty's Phil Happy Happy Happy :)

Well.... I got to the "bottom" of this. Nothing like throwing money at a problem.

I ended up picking up another 2GB Ti Boost and threw it in. Works now. Didn't have to do anything special at all just popped it in and plugged in the SLI cable.

Thanks for the kind support!
