Item Locating System

Sat Mar 08, 2014 1:09 pm

I'm always losing my gloves. I know they're somewhere in the house, but I just can't find them. It would be great if I could put some RFID sticker on them, and then wave a reader around, and see if the signal from this RFID tag is strong here or weak there. Is there such a system out there? Is RFID the right technology, or is there something else?

The problem with RFID is that it is only effective over very short distances so you would probably see your gloves anyway.

Oh, and then you'd lose the RFID reader.

Maybe you can figure out how to implant a tiny speaker in them that beeps. Kinda like the "Page" function on a cordless phone.

Another option would be to dip them in something radioactive, and then walk around the house with a Geiger counter. This has the added bonus that it might turn you into an evil supervillan with giant hands.

The solution is the same as for people who consistently lose any other item:
Establish a place where you put these things every time. Look there first.

Maybe something like the Tile:

Although at $20 apiece, you could probably just buy another pair of gloves...

I would really like to hear from someone who has used the tile. How well does it work? For car keys and sunglasses (of all things).

Some models of Panasonic cordless phones support locators that you can attach to ~anything, though they seem designed mostly for attaching to key rings. From the base station or from another handset, you can page the device to start it beeping. I think they're under $20 each.

Solution: Put an RFID tag on the reader, and have a backup reader!
