Congrats southrncomfortjm. I'd encourage anyone else with a 480 to do the same. Let the miners take all the risk and deal with all the nonsense. You just put the cash in your pocket.

Wow. Did you have to ship international? I'm teetering back toward selling my card. Just too much hassle to mine.

Nope. Amazon to NC. You can probably get even more than I did since mine sold in 2 days. I shoulda tried $599.

Big thanks to Chuckula for the tip!

I'd sell if you intend to get a 1060 or 1070 instead since the 1060 is basically a lateral-grade and the 1070 is a definite upgrade. I decided to go the Switch route and will take a look at Vega when it launches. Hopefully this crazy dies down by then. Only thing I really need a new GPU for will (hopefully) be Anthem in a year or so. Everything else I can play on my laptop.

At this point, I'm probably always going to buy AMD GPUs on the off chance they more than double in price 6 months later. That's happened twice in two years with AMD, probably never with Nvidia.

You can buy me a .... Southern Comfort... sometime!

The problem at this point is the miners are moving to Nvidia cards because they're a more economical, power-efficient option that's more readily available than the higher-performing AMD kit. The fire's spreading; if I sold my RX 480 and snagged $400, what would I spend it on? A pair of GTX 1050 Ti's in SLI? Everything faster that isn't immensely expensive to start is being bought by miners.

Yeah, I noticed that too. 1070s seemed a bit more expensive than normal, with very few options even close to the sub $400 mark, so I decided not to bother. It's a bubble, and it will burst soon - either cards will get too expensive, coin prices will drop, or the miners will buy all the cards they need. Until then I'll just play with my Switch (assuming it ships on 30 June like Gamestop says). I also dug out my old DS lite, Wii, and Nintendo 64 for some retro fun. Will probably spend more time catching up on TV shows too.

Coin mining definitely pays... although it's not the miners that get the money. This reminds me of mining boomtowns in the late 1800's, in a way.

Mostly just the 1070 (for now). 1070 is almost out of stock everywhere and the prices are nearly as much as a 1080, so you might as well go for a 1080 and get Destiny 2 for free. Apparently the 1080 isn't as attractive for mining due to GDDR5X latency.

it's funny the 1070 didn't get as much as crypto attention until now. Crazy not to get it over 480/580 when its cheaper, hashes just as fast as or even faster at 100W, all around better anyway minus Freesync.

A week or so ago, I bought a 1060 6.8" EVGA for $226 after rebate on Newegg and was thinking of ordering a 2nd, but then the run on Nvidia cards began... I was even going to go up to a 1070, but couldn't find them on Newegg or Amazon without markup... guess where i DID find a decently priced 1070??? $449 (slight mark up, but in stock and should arrive in a few days.) on EBAY... The surprise is the seller... NEWEGG!!! You can't find them in stock on their website, but they are selling them on Ebay?!?

It's probably stuff they couldn't sell on their own site because of some dent in the box or something.

Perhaps buying a few units of every kind of useless piece of crap "cryptocoin" as it appears, for pennies, and then sitting on that until the libertardians discover their next "stick it to the fed/down with fiat money" fad, would constitute a better scheme rather than overloading your PC for months?

PS: This "digital age" version of the goode olde goldbugs of yore is just as annoying as the original. People who think currency should be by design deflationary are either economically illiterate or filthy rich reactionaries.

...or they're just tired of dirty non-technical peasants with spurious political and social authority jerking them around. :) As I noted in the other coin thread, true believers tend to be the sort that took the Helios ending in Deus Ex without a second thought because wholesome machines > weak, greedy meatsacks.

If you're gonna speculate though, doing what you describe is the right way to go about it. Once the hype cycle for a given altcoin kicks into overdrive it's already too late to extract much profit from it.

I was thinking the same thing, except that maybe the XBOX's GPU doesn't have the compute capabilities of the off the shelf RX 480/580s since they may not be needed for pure gaming/streaming.

With any luck though, this mining crazy will die down by the time the XBOX launches.

Of course they are - it's not like they can mark up the price that much that fast on their site. People pricecheck all the time even if they're not in a place to buy very soon.

I just need a 560 but prices for that card are in the higher range as well. I may end up getting a non-Ti 1050, which is low-powered for my use case and not a great deal as well.

Just sold my GTX 1060 6GB, only lasted a few hours on Ebay. Sold it at no loss price including fees and shipping costs, didn't use auction to try to extract profit.

Good time to cash out for non-serious gamer, maybe come back in during holidays, or switch to console.

Just an utter suck fest for PC gamers this year. Memory is double in price, SSD $/GB have increased instead of decreasing and now entire GPU price brackets are gone and everything a poor value.

1080ti is now the best buy for the buck for hashing (some are still $699-720, I don't expect it to stay low for long). I have 3 of them hashing now making about $25 a day after power costs, one in my gaming PC when I am not gaming, and 2 in my home server. I drop the power limit from +120 (gaming) to +105 (mining) and it drops the temps from low 70s to low 60s, and only brings down the hashrate by a very small portion.

22-29mh (modded) 480/580s
35-39mh 1070
75-80mh 1080ti

The 1080 (non ti is worse for hashing vs the 1070)

Then it is a good thing that am not and won't be in the new GPU market anytime soon. If this keeps up, most of us will not be buying any mid-range to high-end video cards until sometime next year.

They probably can't. The app partition of the X1 set has access to comparatively little of the system (I don't know if the GPU access is limited, but the RAM and CPU available to the app would be low.) And there's no chance of MS certifying something like that as a game.

As to 'convert' I haven't heard of anyone managing to bypass the OS in the newer MS or Sony consoles, though I guess it could happen.

All told I don't think the machines would survive that kind of usage anyway.

I'd love Vega if it isn't caught up in this (I'm sure it will be, but) though I expect to wait for the mid range versions anyway. Who knows when this all blows over.

Not much point with the Pro about. The original was ok but even when you're talking 1080p the Pro is worlds above it.

At twice the price. I'd be looking for a stopgap on black Friday until GPU prices return to normal is all. Play some Bloodborne and Horizon. Then probably sell it off.

Well, there're plenty of other games that're not on PC. Up to you. I imagine the Pros trade in/resale value is pretty decent too since they say they're selling all they make, though I haven't looked.

It's not just PCs either, I'm also seeing the trend of smartphone makers raising their prices on budget phones while sometimes using even worse hardware *cough Xiaomi cough*, or arrogant enough to price their "flagship killers" so close to Samsung flagships. *cough Oppo cough*
