I finally did it. GTX 970 SLI

Sun May 31, 2015 8:13 pm

So I finally bit the bullet and got myself two Gigabyte Windforce 970's to add to my system. To go along with that, a nice EVGA SuperNOVA 850W PSU to replace the Corsair CX600M I currently have. Pair that with an Acer 27 inch QHD screen that was on sale for a nice price, and I feel like I'm ready to step up to the next level of PC gaming.

I was really on the fence about a lot of things, but when I saw the review for the 980ti hit techreport today, I figured why not. For SLI supported games, the two 970s will still outdo the 980ti for the same price. While I would have loved a nice G-Sync monitor, there are two many trade-offs for the technology now, and I'm not sure I'd be able to push frame rates at 1440p high enough to really take advantage. In any case, I'm really looking forward to experiencing The Witcher 3 in all it's 1440p, (hopefully) 60fps glory. Wish me luck!

G-Sync is about having lower framerates :).

Did you get the Windforce G1's? At any rate, you'll be fine at 1440p and 60Hz with your pair of 970's. If you don't go crazy on the AA in modern games, the pair will push frames consistently past 60 very easily at 4K, so 1440p would be a breeze. For games that use SLI correctly, our pairs of cards are faster than a Titan X by a few %. I really notice it tho when you get the occasional game that doesn't work with SLI and that sucks a bit (I'm looking at you Titanfall).

But hey, what can you do. It's not like I didn't know that could happen, and at the same time, the Titan and it's baby brother Ti are just way outside of what I can afford.

Yeah, but can't blame a guy for wanting to hit that 144Hz refresh on a few of those 1440p screens that are popping up.

I actually just got the regular Windforce, not the G1s. Newegg had a nice rebate offer on the normal one that brought the price to just a hair over $300 a piece, and the G1's were $350 with no rebate... wasn't big on spending $100 more for a pair of those with marginal benefit. Besides, my regular Windforce 770 (not a G1) has been rock solid and a really good overclocker, so I feel pretty confident in my choice. Just hoping they don't sag too much without the backplate on the card.

As for G-Sync - I am aware of the ability for it to smooth out frame delivery at any frame rate, and that it can provide a better experience at lower FPS as well. I guess the big issue for me is the trade-offs to get the technology, and the price associated with it. The only thing that comes close to what I want in a panel is the Acer 144hz IPS g-sync display, but it is way out of my price range at $800. Not being an IPS panel is a non-starter for me, so options are limited. I am going to make the upgrade to a 60hz QHD IPS panel, and I am confident that thanks to g-sync and free sync, the PC display landscape is going to change in a MAJOR way in a couple of years, and that I'll be able to get what I want at a very reasonable price.

Well, if you can deal with the price premium G-Sync adds I've been told it's good.

There's some nice monitors just coming out that caught my eye. There's an Asus PG27AQ that boasts IPS, 4K res and 60Hz - Or an Asus PG279Q that boasts IPS, 1440p (QHD) res and 144Hz. Take your pick.
