Just ordered a Geforce 970.

Fri Sep 18, 2015 7:30 pm

I just this a few minutes ago:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814500362

I hope this worth it. I use Linux, would I be fine with just swapping video cards? Or do I need to reinstall the Nvidia drivers?

cannot say about Linux, but, congratulations on getting an upgrade (at least, I Assume it's an upgrade). =]

Yep, it's the same driver series between the 760 and 970. (It's really the same driver for most of their lineup on Linux, just like Windows.)

Oh, it'll be worth it--there's nothing a 970 can't handle outside 4k/multidisplay and no games on the horizon expected to be out of reach of current performance GPU tech. I've considered that model, as I'm in the market as well and would rather have something that's not massive. Would you be so good to let me know what the noise is like under reasonably heavy load?

Sure will. But keep in mind I do have hearing lose, so I may not be able to hear noise that you can.

get the largest hearing aid possible, reverse a microphone and put your ear under a foot from the card while forcing it to 100% fan speed! (you really shouldn't do that)

I've got the EVGA GTX 970 SSC ACX 2.0+ and it handles some lower requirement games at 4K. I think the toughest game on it I have is Rocket League and it runs fine at 4k. As far as noise goes the only time I hear it is when playing Rocket League and it is definitely audible over anything else in my system.

I think if a card is good enough for a resolution comes to what you value. For me, I like FPS around 60 (given all I have are 60Z monitors) with dips into high 40s okay.

Afterward I hunger for resolution and/or AA.

How the everything works doesn't matter as much as those two things past a certain point. And, that point was mid-high end graphics in 2005-2006 or so.

I just recently got one of those cards. The noise isn't bad. The majority of the time it's pretty quiet and under heavy load its noticeable. I overclocked it like 5% once and it immediately went from noticeable but not really annoying to pretty loud. So its a loud card that's tuned to be pretty quiet essentially all of the time.

I have two GTX 970's at home: one in the wife's Opteron system and one in my Mac Pro. End goal is eventually put both of them into her Opteron sometime next year after the next wave of new GPUs from AMD and nVidia.

The only thing worth noting is that some high end GTX 970's won't boot unless you provide both an 8 pin and 6 pin power connector. I found this out the fun way while attempting to put one into a system with only two 6 pin headers. The more mainstream cards can get by with 6 pin + 6 pin only.

Huh. Does a 6 pin to 8 pin adapter work, or does it have to be a "real" 8 pin connector straight from the PSU?

I've always thought the PCIe power spec is a little silly in this respect.

Usually it checks if it has all pins plugged in I believe.

6+6+PCIe shouldn't be a problem unless your on exotic cooling. That's already a good 450+ watts of power.

I don't have a straight 6 to 8 pin adapter. What I do have is an 8 pin to dual 6 pin and a dual SATA power to 6 pin adapter. So I use a native 6 pin and two SATA power headers to provide power to a single 8 pin connector. So far everything work fine.

I got the card today! And boy is it shorter then the 760 it's replacing. I only played "Shadow of Mordor" and "Civ: Beyond Earth" and they were like twice as fast. I didn't notice any increase in noise.

Yes it is. And I'm going to play some other games as well.
