GTX 760 - Two six-pin PSU connectors in two eight-pin slots

Fri Jul 22, 2016 9:08 pm

Comrade Gerbils

I just put an MSI GTX 760 into my kids PC, replacing an Radeon HD6950. The 760 has two eight-pin slots on it and my kids PSU has only two six-pin connectors. I put the six-pins into the eight bit slots and it booted up fine and installed the drivers. Is there any problem with doing so? Will it potentially slow the card down or make it less stable?

Thanks in advance.

How it will behave depends on the manufacturer. Your experience so far suggests that it is doing fine at stock speeds. If you can confirm that a 3D application works, you may not need to do anything else.
If you're really worried about it, you can use an adapter.

Thanks @JustAnEngineer for the reply.

I booted up overwatch and played it. It ran fine, and was stable, though not fast. Is it possible that the six pin connectors are not supplying enough power? Could it be slowing the card down, or is it usually a case of 'if it works at all, then it is working fine'?

The GTX 760 has a TDP of 170w, most of the cards came with a single 8 pin.
If you read the manual for the card it might say it can run with 1x8 pin, in which case just buy an adapter for 2x6pin to 1x8pin.

Some cards have circuitry to detect how many pins are actually hooked up. They could also just be soldered together, making it moot.

In any case you can check if the card is throttling.. Download GPUz, and run a game or a graphics stress test like furmark; GPUz should show the card reaching it's advertised clock speeds while the stress test is running.
