Thin and light laptops with 14nm GPUs

Wed Nov 23, 2016 11:18 am

Sooooo......

Where are the Polaris 11, GTX 1050 and 1050 Ti laptops then?

The 1080, 1070 and 1060 laptops were on the market at practically the same time as the desktop cards were announced, but it's been a month since the 1050 series were available and there's still no hint of laptops yet other than dubious leaked benchmarks from Chinese social media.

Have any of you seen or heard anything more recent? They've missed Cyber Monday and they're going to miss Christmas at this rate....

Apple is likely snatching up every mobile-worthy Polaris chips. I'm not joking.

And they're nicely back-ordered too, we're having to wait for ours at work (which isn't going down too well...).

Surprised tech sites have not said much-probably largest chip Sammy has made(3 billion transistors)

Not sure. For number of transistors, it is very possible that those set a record for the company. Die size not likely though. Back in the day they used to fab some of the DEC Alpha chips which topped out at around 400 mm^2. Samsung has also manufactured some large SRAM dies during that era as well. Samsung also made some FPGAs for a few players and those can be massive in die size.

They probably have a s**tload of 960m-965m-970m they need to clear first.............
They're probably a little confused on how to position them as well.
1070 pretty much takes care of the desktop replacement/high end
1060/3 and 1060/6 takes care of nearly all gaming lappies below that.
The 5 series was normally positioned in lower build machines-1366-spinning rust.
But with 1050Ti beating 970m they probably need something in between.
PATIENCE...................................

Yeah, the sceptic in me suspects that they're artificially delaying the mobile 1050 series to clear inventory of the near-obsolete GM107 stock.

The GTX960M may have a current name but it struggles on several modern titles at 1080p even with the details turned down, and that's because it's a budget GPU from almost three years ago under that fancy 9-series label.

You'd certainly struggle with a desktop 745 or downclocked 750Ti these days, even at 720p in some 2015 games so why is it still acceptable to put them in "gaming laptops" with 1080p screens under the guise of 950M and 960M going in to 2017?

Laptop graphics model names are even more intentionally-deceptive than desktop parts.  GeForce GTX960M = GTX750Ti.  GTX965M=GTX950.
· R7-5800X, Liquid Freezer II 280, RoG Strix X570-E, 64GiB PC4-28800, Suprim Liquid RTX4090, 2TB SX8200Pro +4TB S860 +NAS, Define 7 Compact, Super Flower SF-1000F14TP, S3220DGF +32UD99, FC900R OE, DeathAdder2

It's not even that simple!
For example, the 965M is actually one of several possible products all lumped together under one vague name. It could be:

  • a GM204 with a disabled memory controller and units to reduce power consumption, so an underclocked desktop 960 with 2 of the 10 SMMs disabled.
  • a GM206-250 with reduced boost clocks to meet the TDP target of 75W, so an underclocked but fully-enabled desktop 950 with all 6 SMMs enabled.
  • a GM206-300 without boost and a fixed 944MHz base clock to meet the 90W TDP target with all 8 SMMs enabled.

It has always been the way with "OEM" nvidia products having completely random silicon in them and being overclocked/castrated/underclocked as necessary to meet the platform's size, power and cooling requirements. I'm not saying I like it, but the only way to know what performance a particular laptop GPU has it to benchmark that particular laptop. The model name GTX <insert number here> is nothing but a very approximate indicator once you leave the clearly-defined specification realms of consumer add-in boards.

Sheesh My bad...I don't read up for a couple months and I am all of a sudden I am out of touch a bit......sorry but the 1050 is new:) up till it NV was 16nm to the best of my knowledge :)

The real question is how much power it is going to use - TSMC's 16nm is really impressive, Samsung's 14nm seems to be putting the (desktop) 1050 at 62W under typical load and 75W cap:

Don't know if it's fair to compare this way but-1060 uses 188% the power of 1050 and gives 196% the performance.
that puts TSMC ahead by about 9%.
Each manufacturer will probably set clocks and voltage to suit their chassis/cooling capabilities..........
Perhaps that's another reason we're waiting-Not enough binned chips that'll run at lower voltage

Yeah, Q1 2017 and that's only an unsubstantiated rumour.

They're flogging off their old Maxwell stock.

I'll take a quality 1366x768 screen on a laptop intended for gaming. Mostly because it stresses the GPU a lot less.

I have Fallout 4 running adequately well on a Intel 5500 iGPU and it only works because of the low resolution.

You're right!

Looks like they're working on the smaller systems first, which makes sense given the differences.

This!  It drives me insane that every laptop manufacturer has decided that 4K+ screens are the new thing, despite being a huge hit to battery life and of dubious utility in 13" and 15" form factors.  Doubly awful if they're touch screens, of course.  I'm worried that my next laptop won't even have the option of good old 1080P.

1050 is not a card one would want on the desktop, but is a perfect compromise in a laptop(remembering laptops are all about compromise)
and is a very capable 1080 card.If they make the Ti available even better.
The 4K is a "option" should perhaps the purchaser be interested in photography.
