Your GPU Sucks: Unigine Superposition Released

Tue Apr 11, 2017 1:22 pm

I'm sure TR will be taking it for a spin, but the Unigine Superposition benchmark has been released.

These are the same guys who produce the well-known Heaven & Valley benchmark/demo programs that you've seen around the web for quite some time.

From the early indications, it looks like this benchmark can easily bring even a GTX-1080Ti to its knees at higher resolutions and quality levels, so it should be fun to take out for a spin.

Looks like their servers are getting hammered. My download is variable in the 50-200 KB/s range.

Pffffft. I already know my GPU sucks. I don't need a test to tell me that!

Re: Your GPU Sucks: Unigine Superposition Released

I just noticed my VRAM OC is no longer taking effect. Why is my VRAM OC no longer taking effect? It looks like Nvidia broke something.

Anyway, I'm testing with up-to-date Arch Linux, a G3258 at 4.2, 8GB of DDR3-2133, a 4GB GTX 960, and Nvidia proprietary drivers. Some observations:

* There's a lot of cool debug info available in game mode.

* HOLY TRIANGLE COUNT BATMAN. As in, there are never fewer triangles than there are pixels on my 1080p screen, including when looking at a flat blackboard. Despite that, the triangle count changes in a fine-grained manner with view movement, so that measurement comes from after some decent culling. I can't find any of them in wireframe though. What's going on here?

* Run-to-run variance is still extremely low. Three 1080p/medium runs got me averages of 36.10/36.06/36.02.

* VRAM use estimates appear legit. When I go over 4GB, framerates really do go through the floor. Nvidia-settings' readings of VRAM use match up with Unigine's estimates.

* CPU load gets increasingly variable (seemingly tied to lighting) at high resolutions and texture levels. Methinks their GI has a big CPU component that costs a lot when the lighting environment changes, and they chose to tie its quality to textures. That seems to lead to hitchiness in some situations, but it does have its advantages.

* Why so much blur? Oh right, because the AA doesn't really work. 1080p/extreme minus the DoF and MB looks like a jaggy-tastic mess, and has a ton of speckle that again looks like it was supposed to be handled by literally just blurring everything. Also, why is this still a problem even when I'm testing at 8K?

* At 1080p and high textures, low/medium/high/extreme shaders resulted in 55.26/35.66/24.96/8.11. Low without DoF or MB resulted in 70.25. Textures have little performance effect in typical conditions.

* At high shaders, medium textures (to make VRAM work), and DoF/MB off, 1080p/1440p/4K resulted in 28.54/18.05/8.67. Note how framerate drops suspiciously fast with increasing pixel count. It's easy to make SSAO algos with cost increasing at the square of pixel count, and Heaven/Valley had that problem. My guess is Superposition does too, and it relies on 4K/8K optimized to fix it.

* 4K/8K optimized suck. It looks like they mostly just cut the resolution on a bunch of operations, like DoF and shadows. AO and ambient also definitely take hits, but in ways that make more sense. No thanks, if I'm running 4K it isn't because I want my DoF to generate 1080p jaggies out of thin air (also random speckles?).

* The highest framerate I can get (1024x768 everything minimum) is 107.69. 1152x864 (26% more pixels) resulted in 98.78. Considering all the work that Unigine doesn't make per-pixel, it looks like the CPU headroom here is pretty good.

* I would have tested GPU core clock versus VRAM clock sensitivity, but as I said, Nvidia seems to have broken my clock controls.

Generally speaking, there's a lot of cool stuff here, but I'm unimpressed by the attention to detail (or lack thereof).

I forgot CPU use patterns. One thread occupies 100% no matter what, another occupies about 0.1% per FPS, and a few others are variable but always less than 2%. I didn't check in the very high-res high textures situation that I saw generating uneven CPU load, because the resulting window takes up the whole screen and if the benchmark loses focus it exits. That one is pretty annoying.

VRAM clock is 7010, core clock bounces between 1429 and 1442.

Extreme really is pretty extreme - this card is substantially faster than a PS4, but, well, ^ that ^.

8K optimized benchmark just for the lulz on an 980ti running at 1326 core(clock hovered around 1400 in benchmark) and 3800 memory.

Looks gorgeous and I'm surprised it ran as well as it did, wasn't actually super choppy since the framerate was consistent enough.

I'll take a look at the benchmark later. Hopefully, it is as good as Valley for just exploring and relaxing.

Until HWBOT has it available for points, I probably won't take a serious stab at benching it, however.

One more update on the overly technical stuff - I somehow failed to notice before that it does allow custom resolutions, so I can check out what it looks like when CPU-limited. 512x512 with everything minimum creates a min/avg/max of 91.01/121.43/166.38. If 1080p / extreme is what we're using, it's safe to say we won't need to worry about that for a while.

Zis support Vulkan or DX12?

I never even gave their other benches a look so will probably pass on this one too if it's using old APIs.

Per the Tom's Hardware article, the command-line automation has gone from the Advanced version and is now only in Pro. At the same time, the price is up from $15 to $20. I actually had it in a basket before finding out these things, did not complete the purchase (and so passing on the info in case anyone else is even more trigger-happy than I was).

Presumably Pro is up from the already unaffordable $500, too. $1000

I presume you ran the benchmark @1080p and extreme settings.
My computer
CPU : Intel Core i5 3550 @3300 MHz / 3700 (Actual)
RAM : 16GB DDR3 1333 MHz
GPU : ASUS Geforce GTX 1060 6GB OC Dual. (GPU @1974 MHz, mem @2003 MHz)
Driver : 378.49
OS : Windows 7 (build 7601)

FPS (min/avg/max) : 14.29/17.52/20.38
Score : 2342

Fact is it runs quite well at high detail @1080p, with no apparent stuttering.

Not exactly a state of the art system (the i5-3470 is maybe getting a little bit long on the tooth for torture benchmarking, only 8gigs of ram), but my R9 Fury came through for me. Better than I expected.

2 x Asus Strix 1070's - Core was between 1972-1999Mhz and memory at 8800Mhz effective. Shame SLI isn't supported though.

The CPU is actually overclocked to 4.4Ghz across all 8 threads, but it apparently can't detect that. Add me to the spreadsheet...!

Well, my system takes a pretty bad beating on the extreme setting, like "It should have called the police" bad, but it's actually surprisingly smooth on the High setting. It will be interesting to see how much it helps when I can use all 3 of my Phenom II cores when Unigine rolls out their Vulkan support later this year (https://twitter.com/Unigine/status/852439793208369152).
