TPU “Advertorial By AMD”...

Tue Jun 27, 2017 10:05 pm

Oh dear, I really hope Scott wasn't involved in this shemozzle... DeliddedTech covers TechPowerUp posting a weird AMD advertorial spruiking the RX 560 over the GTX 1050.

I'm not defending the "advertorial" but this statement doesn't appear to be correct...

"The problem is that the chart isn’t even graphically accurate. For example, for Resident Evil, the GTX 1050 scores 63 FPS, but somehow ends up on the left side of the “60 FPS” vertical bar. "

It looks like it's on the right side to me... ? Was the chart updated?

Probably, they really should have hosted the original image themselves...

Wayback has neither an archived version of the TPU page nor a copy of the URL linked in the OP.

They updated it. It was clearly on the wrong side of the line when I looked at it last also.

And in the end they blamed their readers.

With the rise of ad-blocking software, traditional script-based ads are becoming ineffective, especially when a site relies on catering to tech-savvy individuals that are more likely to run adblockers, leading many news sites to adapt sponsored articles disguised as real content. It is considered important ethics to properly mark sponsored content as sponsored, rather than trying to hide disclaimers off to the side.

"If you won't let our intrusive, auto-playing video ads through we have to do this."

Don't blame the readers for blocking scripts that eat ~10% of their CPU and/or make your site unresponsive. I'm fine with advertising on sites. I get it. But when your site is unusable because of advertisement scripts I just disable them. In some cases I just boycott the site.
