GTX 1070 Pricing?

Tue Aug 15, 2017 9:46 pm

What's with the GTX 1070 pricing? On Newegg a GTX 1080 is $550 and a 1070 is $499. Some of the 1070s are the same price... Is that because of bitcoin mining? I paid $350 for my 970 when it was new. I'd be down to spend that. I don't need a 1080 and who would by a 1070 for nearly the same price?

Yep it's all due to the Mining craze going on.

Yeah, I'd just skip to a 1080 or 1080 Ti, if I weren't to just wait. Which is what I'm actually doing, because despite having a 1440p 165Hz monitor, I don't have any games that I'm just dying to play better than my single 970 can play right now.

For me, the upgrade would come with a jump to an HDR 32"+ 4k 120Hz G-Sync panel, or possibly a VR setup which might require even more.

Why would you buy a 1070 when you can buy a 1080 for $509... https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product. ... gnorebbr=1
It's out of stock right now but they have been going in and out of stock for a few weeks. I'm very tempted but like Airmantharp I don't really need one.
Windows10, EVGA G2 750w Power Supply, Acer XB270H G-synch monitor, MSI Krait Gaming 3X, I7 6700K, 16 gigs of CORSAIR Vengeance LPX DDR4 3200 MHz ram, Crucial 500 gig SSD, EVGA GTX1080 FTW

I'm in the same boat. I don't want to pay $500+ to play. Kind of more than I want to pay to go up to the 1060 6GB launch price, let alone the inflated price. Just need to wait for the market to settle a little bit.

The 1070 was supposed to be $350, but I'm seeing $440 prices. However the 1080 is almost back to MSRP, multiple models are selling at $510.

I was window shopping 1080s for a while until the mining craze threw things out of whack. I saw 1080s as low as 450 at one point, this may have been a fluke I saw one card listed at that price for a few days in May 2017. I've decided to wait for the 1170s. Nvidia has been on about an 18 month release schedule so there should be new cards in late October-November 2017 time frame.

southrncomfortjm comment below mine is correct the 1080s have not been affected as much by the mining craze, I had two points:
1. While watching 1080 prices I was blown away by the price spike of 1170s being withing 50-60 dollars of 1080s.
2. If the 11xx series is maybe 3 months out I dont want to buy a 10xx series card at this point.

The 1080 was never really impacted by mining since it was never very good for mining ETH due to GDDR5X's latency compared to regular GDDR5.
