Bad timing on my new build... future supply and demand?

I built a ryzen 1600 system so i could have my own desktop again. Plopped my rx460 in and all was well until I loaded PUBG. I play CSGO at 150+fps, and bumping down below 40-50fps on lowest settings is having me miss opportunities I would never miss in csgo. So I went to get a 1060 6gb... but prices wtf mining. The new amd offerings are either inflated prices or not as good as the green team in the unreal 4 engine, and have a huge poet draw issue.

When is the graphics card market expected to come back to normal? Any expectations on timing on replacing the aging Pascal?

TLDR: when will it be a good time to buy a graphics card?

Short answer is nobody knows.

I'm hoping AMD actually having competition will bring prices down once the mining crap dies down, if it dies down at all. Give it another 3-4 months though, we'll see how things are in January after all the holiday **** is over.

Well based on what Jensen Huang said during a recent earnings call:

"Volta for gaming, we haven't announced anything. And all I can say is that our pipeline is filled with some exciting new toys for the gamers, and we have some really exciting new technology to offer them in the pipeline. But for the holiday season for the foreseeable future, I think Pascal is just unbeatable," Huang stated during a recent earnings call.

Looks like Nvidia is in no rush to push out Volta since Vega is a dud. I wanted to hold off building a new rig until Coffee Lake + Volta, but it looks like that might take until next Spring.

Shouldn't a 1600 + RX460 be maxing CS:GO at 300 fps easily?

This one is "only" about a 10% premium over it's original price:

Direct from EVGA isn't horrible either (..and perhaps it's similar with other manufacturers):

CSGO is no issue, though I'm not maxed out. I favor frame rates above 144hz over visuals. I get ~200 FPS on most maps, Nuke or Canals around 130. I use a 144Hz monitor and it is wonderful. Playerunknown's Battlegrounds (pubg) is another story. I'm always below 60, usually around 45-50 and the game stutters enough to miss changes of direction of the opponent. I think a 1060 6GB would get me above 100 consistently at low graphics settings, but I don't feel good paying a 15% price premium on a graphics card that is more than a year old. I should have bought the 1060 6GB when I only played CSGO :D. The poor man pays twice, so they say.

This is interesting. My experience with development in industry is that if they had something they could push out sooner, they would. I'm leaning towards waiting for volta now that AMD doesn't have anything better than the 1 year old products. Might as well wait 4-6 months for volta and play more silky smooth CSGO? I hope the de_dust2 remake comes out soon.

Ah, I had a reading fail, sorry. That still seems a bit slower than CS:GO should be running on that hardware, but it's within reason.

People, myself included, thought the mining bubble was popping a month ago. That's not only not happened, but the bubble seems to have stabilized again. So best answer is probably not anytime soon even when Vega supply catches up.

Dont forget RAM and SSD prices are at all time high also.

If it makes you feel better the Ryzen 1600 part of the equation was probably timed pretty well since I'm assuming you weren't in the market for a Skylake X/Threadripper type system in the first place.

Right now the GTX-1080 is ironically a relatively good deal because it's not popular with miners, it's price has come down noticeably from launch last year, and now that Vega is out we know that the 1080 is definitely not obsolete or overpriced. Of course, if it's above your price range it might not matter even if relatively speaking it's a good deal for its price bracket.

I'm guessing spring/summer 2018 looks to be the next time to expect anything new on the GPU front and I'm expecting it to be from Nvidia because unless AMD has a major GPU in the pipeline that they do not want to talk about (and that would be massively out of character for them) then the next truly new GPU is Navi in 2019 with the possibility of some sort of Vega "refresh" next year but don't expect it to be early next year.

Yeah, I did well on gpu and motherboard. Got the 1600 for $200 new on sale at newegg with cooler. It is plenty fast, even on pubg. Csgo is gpu bound, so I do better there than my old situation. Case and power supply were good, too. Memory was high but not a dealbreaker. Got a new ssd for giggles, about what they were in May.

Graphics though, still messed up. I think I'll wait for spring or spring for an eBay find.

Cheap mining cards were being dumped a month ago so if the bubble goes unstable again there should be a new surge. The only question is do you really want to buy such a hard-used or even abused card.

24/7 max load is one thing, but 24/7 max loads at >80c temps is another thing altogether in my opinion.

Ethereum has to crash in price drastically or otherwise become unappealing for GPU mining. Unclear if ASICs will ever come out for ETH. This Proof Of Stake stuff they keep talking about may have an impact at some point since I think that's supposed to make GPU mining less effective.

So yeah, no one knows. A good bet may be to get a GTX 1080 at right around $500 if you just don't want to pay above MSRP for a good card.

Honestly, best overall bet may be to get that 6gb 1060 and put it to mining when you aren't playing. If this goes on long enough you'll make decent cash that should cover the markup on the card. Just use Nicehash Miner and convert your BTC into gift cards using Gyft. It's what I do. Made $90 in Amazon gift cards so far on about $15 in power costs.
