GPU prices to keep rising?

Wed Aug 23, 2017 6:12 pm

Between the rising prices of GDDR5, cryptocurrency mining, and the availability of HBM2, there may be no relief in sight for rising CPU prices.

The research firm had also noted that capacity expansion will be rather subdued as manufacturers try to keep commanding the higher margins of an undersupply environment.

Yeah, that. Most pro-business way to phrase "ill-behaved oligopoly" I've heard lately.

If prices of DDR4 are any indication (and applying a bit of upward adjustment for GDDR5), VRAM must be a bigger BOM item than the GPUs themselves on many cards now.

I was all set to make a post pointing out used GPU prices are still below what they were in July, but after a quick check I'll have to eat my words.

Used R9 380's were selling for ~$220 on ebay during July's peak before they dropping to around $180, and now they've back to $220 again and climbing, almost all of them are $250 after shipping. Incredible. :o

Even corporate press is now more and more referring to the chip makers "lax" attitude to upgrading capacity and more cautiously and less often towing the party line about "process switch" and the rest of that crap. The oligopoly and its practices are now eating into the viability of other businesses earnestly. Nintendo is getting hit pretty hard, too, as it can't satisfy demand for the Switch. But hey, we don't want Toshiba's nand department ending up outside "family". Heaven forbid the Chinese get their hands on it and break the cartel!

The Hynix and Samsungs of this world will simply get a piddly slap in the hand for colluding about ten years from now, which they'll have made many times over by colluding. Monopolies. Unregulated Capitalism at its finest.

By the way... the oligopoly itself is pretty upfront about running a cartel.

"For Taiwan's leading memory chip maker Nanya Technology, China's ambition to build up a competitive semiconductor sector is a threat to the balance of the industry, although it will not have an impact before three to five years, according to a top company executive.

"Currently, the industry's key players are in control over their output expansion and we don't see any incentive at the moment for them to license technology to new players in China"

Other way around actually, Asian markets are *very* strongly regulated to the point where those without deep government connections need not apply. If they actually did the laissez-faire thing over there, the chaebol and keiretsu would both immediately collapse under the crushing weight of all that quasi-feudalistic inefficiency. But considering that that this arrangement has worked out very well for the Japanese and spectacularly well for the Koreans it's unlikely to change any time soon.

Less of a supply issue, more of a demand issue. Just look at the amount of shipments Q2. http://www.anandtech.com/show/11762/cry ... in-q2-2017

To go with my last post, apparently GPUs are now sold in 6-packs. https://www.amazon.com/Sapphire-11266-1 ... B074CPKKPL
