GIGABYTE AORUS GeForce GTX 1080 Ti Xtreme Edition

Sat Sep 02, 2017 8:30 am

So I have a GIGABYTE AORUS GeForce GTX 1080 Ti Xtreme Edition 11GB (GV-N108TAORUS X-11GD) coming in the mail. I took extra precautions and fully researched before purchasing. I took the plunge. https://www.gigabyte.com/Graphics-Card/GV-N108TAORUS-X-11GD
The main issue is, many of the reviews said the cards bios will need to be updated for stability issues. And after that it was ok. I have seldom done this in the past. Is this high risk? If I follow the instructions to do it?

Unless it's a dual BIOS card then there is always risk involved in updating a BIOS. If Gigabyte themselves say you need to update it and provides you with the BIOS version to update it with, then it's covered under the warranty.

As always when flashing a BIOS make sure the system is stable, the update is already downloaded to a local drive, and preferably with the system behind a UPS.

Thank you for replying!
It is a dual BIOS card. And I hope It arrives with the latest bios.
I do have a stable system for the rest of the computer, and attached to a UPS.
The card should arrive by Tuesday or Wednesday next week.
I will keep updating the progress.

I've been doing a bit of reading on this as I've just bought an Aorus 1080 Ti as well. The main issue with the bios was that the original F3 version came with a stock power limit of 250W, whereas most oem overclocked cards shipped with default power limits closer to 300W. This is the main difference in the newer bios (F3P) as it comes with a default power limit of 300W. Both bios allow the card's power limit to go up to the same 375W maximum. There is also rumblings that this issue may have been exacerbated in early Aorus cards - perhaps the first batch of 1080 Ti chips Gigabyte received were a bit subpar. But this should be resolved by now. It was also alleged that Gigabyte may have been lacking in quality control on thermal paste application. But your temps should give that away as soon as you load the card. (Ie, the card shouldn't be hitting higher than mid-high 70s deg C at load, unless your case has very poor air circulation).

So if you already have F3P bios, then there's nothing to update to.

I highly doubt that flashing the bios voids your warranty as Gigabyte makes these bios available directly on their support page. Re-applying thermal paste, however, might.

So I installed the graphics card and checked the bios version. It is that latest one F3P. Good to go!
