I'd be willing to bet the crypto bubble has at least some effect. When a high-end GPU has as much RAM on it as a mid-range PC's motherboard, the GPUs are accounting for a significant chunk of the market. Even though it's not the exact same type of RAM, it is utilizing fab capacity.
That'd be my guess--at the least there's chip infrastructure dedicated to it. No doubt Korean price manipulation is a chunk of it as well. They say smartphones are gobbling up RAM as well. Whatever the contributing factors, it's all plain to see that it's raising the barrier to entry for gamers. Hear ye, we'll need more protest carols for the holiday!
