How much of the Vega team is devoted to Apple drivers?

Thu Sep 21, 2017 4:29 pm

I'm surprised there had been so little talk about it, but we all know that Apple is one of, if not THE biggest purchaser of Vega chips.

I don't know how many of the new Mac pros they intend to sell, but there is no doubt that Apple has a loyal fanbase wanting to upgrade from their trashcan pros.

More importantly, Apple demands their products "just work." I don't think Apple users really want to download monthly driver updates, not even the pros.

We know for now that current Vega STILL doesn't have all its features enabled, like primitive shaders. I don't think Apple would be happy with that.

So that makes me wonder... How much of the driver team is working to please their biggest customer, as opposed to gamers?

I thought Apple writes their own drivers?
The Model M is not for the faint of heart. You either like them or hate them.

All of it.

I mean, it's not like you can cut AMD Driver Guy into two, like King Solomon, or something.

Vega support on the Mac side likely won't arrive until the hardware starts shipping in the iMac Pro, expected in December. That gives them a bit of time to cook on the developer side before arrival.

The real Mac Pro replacement isn't going to arrive until well into 2018. I'm just pleased that we're getting a real update (NOT LIKE I HAVEN'T BEEN WAIT FOR MORE THAN HALF A DECADE) with real PCIe slots it seems.

Unless Apple was planning on immediately leveraging those new features, they probably don't care.

Well, there is a big push for open source Linux. I'm guessing that it probably helps more than it hurts being OS X is a flavor of Unix or at least based on it.

I have NO idea where this is coming from. I can't imagine this is true, at all.

how many mac pros do you think Apple expects to sell?

compare that with... zero other OEMs incorporating Vega right now. And the enthusiast market, which is split between a dozen different AIB partners.

Apple is one customer, and very likely to be the biggest for a while. Can you name one that could be bigger?

Can you point to one shred of evidence that Apple is that large of a customer for Vega? You made the claim; it's your job to support it.

Right now, AMD can barely keep up with demand. Vega prices have hit insane levels at retail.

Apple could easily outbid AIB manufacturers to lock in a GPU supply, but that doesn't guarantee an enormous volume.
