Yeah, I thought 720p, 1080p etc were 16:9 HDTV standards. It's not an HDTV if it's not capable of displaying a 16:9 broadcast at that vertical resolution.

Whether I would call 2560x1080 '1080p' is a tough one. Technically there are 1080 vertical pixels and it's a progressive scan rather an interlaced scan, but it's going to play 1080p content without distorting (stretching) the image, or cropping it to 1920x1080 anyway.

Despite what some pedants might say, in common usage (not common mis-usage), 1080p would refer to 1920x1080 progressive scan formated video. In referencing a display as 1080p, the common interpretation would be said display has the same physical resolution as 1080p content -- 1920x1080.
