144hz, Display Port Cable Requirements

Thu Nov 30, 2017 4:47 pm

So I got my Nixeus EDG 27 and forgot to even think about refresh rates supported by HDMI. Now my 7850 doesn't have HDMI 2.0 (just 1.4) and my card of course is dumb and has 2 mini display ports. So I need another cable, mini to full sized display port.

However, I noticed the same old story as when HDMI was released. Cables claiming bigger and better things. The one concerning thing is cables claiming things like [email protected] I can't seem to find any of the cables claiming 144hz at 1440 or higher resolution. So the question is, are all DP cables created more or less equal?

No. Later versions have differences, most relevant is bandwidth increases. The Wikipedia article lists these, and the link is to the table which shows the version you need for the res and refresh you want. For 2560x1440@144, DP 1.2 is the minimum, 1.0 or 1.1 cables won't work. If it doesn't say which revision it is, it's usually old IME...

Good to know, so it's not hype. I haven't seen or used a lot of DP displays in business machines until the end of this year. I'm thinking 2018 is going to usher in the era of DP even in more mainstream/work systems.

Dell had some major DP issues on their Optiplex 3050. Using DP from onboard will randomly black the screen out and it comes back in only if you turn the display off and back on, sometimes. This is with Dells included DP monitor and cable. It's a major issue on their forums for that specific model. But other than that, I can see 2018 being the year of the DP.

You'd think so, but HDMI is on almost, if not, every single TV out there. Projectors aren't used as much anymore, either. DP is on most video cards, but way less laptops and motherboards even though it's been pretty well known for years and years.

BTW if it wasn't clear, that DP cable I linked above should work fine for what you need.

Yep, appreciate the link. Monoprice charges for shipping here so I usually don't use them unless it's an item I can really wait on and I'm buying bulk at a larger discount than Newegg or Amazon can get me since they ship free with my membership.

Oh man, I know, their shipping is ridiculous. It's just the first place I go to because I know they'll usually have what is needed and their site is decently organized. For sure, Amazon it if you can find it.

My Ryzen build was temporarily KO’ed by an iffy DP cable.

You can't go wrong with Accell Display port cables. I've tried other brands and Accell is the one that consistently gives me perfect results with 4K@60 hz 4:4:4 and 2560x1440@165 hz. Their 10 footer works perfect for my system - even when I used a Startech 3 foot DP 1.2 extension cable with 4K@60hz and 1440p@165hz!

Those are the ones I use too. Granted I'm only running 1080p @ 144hz. But it should work fine for 1440p and apparently does for you. :D

I had issues with the cable that came with my 27" Predator running at 1440p165, and am using an Accell DP cable now. No more issues!
