1080Ti K|NGP|N or FTW3 Elite Gaming Black? Help me choose between these two cards...

Wed Dec 13, 2017 10:52 am

Should I get the 1080Ti K|NGP|N or FTW3 Elite Gaming Black?

I would run it at stock speeds. All I want (i.e., what is most important to me) is reliability. I do not want to deal with RMAs or inconsistent performance and I don't care about coil whine. I'm curious as to whether the K|NGP|N will be a more reliable card because it contains a binned chip and is allegedly more heavily tested compared to the FTW3 Elite Gaming Black (I'm presuming this because of the binned chip).

Related insight to these two cards that would help me make a decision is very much appreciated.

Thanks.

So you want help choosing between $1000 spec and $850 spec ?

Rlly?

But since I bit, get the $1000 one. Or get the other and $150 worth of chocolate or beer or whatever floats your boat.

Why not the $710 spec if you'll only run at stock clocks? I can't imagine it's $290 worth of less reliable than the $1000 one. YMMV.

Also, more generally, how and why does EVGA have 18 different models of GeForce GTX 1080 Ti?

Get the cheapest 1080 Ti you can find from a company that you feel comfortable with that has a decent cooler. Don't overthink it. You don't need over the top power delivery circuitry if you are running it at stock.

The EVGA 1080Ti SC2 for $770 has the iCX tech (more thermal sensors, async fans, better power delivery, etc etc). That's what I'd go for.

Clock-wise, almost any 1080Ti you buy will actually run closer to 1700+ MHz (on it's own) than whatever the spec sheet says, so that's a moot point.

Get the FTW3. The Kingpin is only better for subambient overclocking and costs significantly more.

I like EVGA a lot more than I like non-EVGA, especially if you're not looking to overclock.

The silicon quality doesn't matter as far as reliability is concerned, only the VRM design really seems to matter. So there's no reason to pay more for that, these chips are only validated to meet the advertised clock specifications and nothing more. .

While the Kingpin card has the most robust VRM setup, the FTW3 models still use an improved VRM design over reference models. If you aren't going to overclock then it really doesn't matter, stick with the FTW3 or even buy a cheaper model.

At the time I bought my 1080 Ti Hydro I didn't realize the FTW model used a larger PCB with more phases/chokes. But even with a stock VRM setup my SC2 Hydro model runs at a constant ~2050 which pegs it at Kingpin levels.

If you are concerned about reliability, you can buy the cheapest model 1080 Ti and then just use a small portion of the money saved to upgrade it to a 5 (or even 10) year warranty, the cost depends on the model in question. So you have a few options to pick from here. Even a 1080 Ti hydrocopper can be upgraded to a 10 year warranty for just $60. :D

Founder's edition, if you want a well-behaved, well-made card. It's as fast as anything else at stock speeds - the only reason these fancy versions exist is for overclocking, which you say you're not going to bother with.

That reference blower is really good for a blower and it's 250W of heat you're not dumping in your case.

Otherwise, if you really hate blowers and you're in the US, get the cheapest EVGA for customer support reasons. In Europe you're better off going with the retailer who you find to be the best at RMAs.

I don't think warranty length speaks to reliability, really, and also what's the point in a 10Y warranty on a $700+ GPU?

If I'd done that and was in year 9 now, I'd still be running a $650 GTX 280 1 GB and killing my ears and the planet for sub-GTX 1050 performance in those games that will even run on it.

What's the point? If you're buying a 1080 Ti, unless it's a windfall and you don't usually have the money (in which case surely there's better ways to enjoy that!), you'll be getting a 1180 Ti or 1280 Ti when they come out rather than settling for 1180 or 1270 performance for your future self.

I never claimed it does. Just that buy having the warranty you will always be covered for a replacement GPU. So buying a $700 1080 Ti and a $30 or 60 warranty makes more sense than a $1000 card for "better grade silicon" hoping it would last longer.

I'm not sure if a 10 year warranty is justified, however EVGA doesn't keep a warehouse full of old stock around. Once the RMA dept is out of that GPU they will upgrade to whatever gen they have in stock. A five year range alone spans from the 480 to the 980 generation, so a 480 that failed would probably get a 770, 780, or 960 back which is actually a very large perf upgrade. I think the 5 year warranty was $30.

Keep in mind the 10 year warranty carries over to whatever the replacement card is. So I think it is likely the user could expect to end up with a twice, even thrice upgraded GPU over the span of a decade warranty.

Is there any evidence that this has ever happened?

I'd be surprised if e.g. for $20 one could get 3 replacements of a $60 GPU.

I'm not aware of any cases with the ten year warranty. But I've been a member of their forums long enough to see owners getting generational upgrades just with the regular 3-year warranty.

The cheapest card EVGA has is the $85 1030, so even $20 may wind up being profitable for them. Who knows. A lot of gamers got the 5 or 10 year option on their 780 Ti's but later sold the cards to upgrade. The extended warranty doesn't transfer, so EVGA definitely made money off them.

EVGA has stated plainly that the remainder of the original warranty carries over to the replacement card, it's been asked repeatedly on their forums. However, refurbs and OEM model cards aren't eligible, it has to be a -KR. The warranty can't be upgraded past 90 days from the original purchase from a retailer. And odds are it will be a refurb not a new model received back. https://www.evga.com/support/warranty/extended.asp

Hang on, you just said that you "think it is likely the user could expect to end up with a twice, even thrice upgraded GPU over the span of a decade warranty". Which is it?

Um, no it's not. EVGA has 2 $80 GT 1030 in the current generation, and a bunch of older cards for sale on its site, including some stock of 4 models of low-end Tesla cards (G86- and GT218-based) for $34.

Which speaks to

I find it quite surprising if EVGA is selling 8400 GS's while giving out warrantly replacements of higher spec and more recent vintage than the failed cards people allegedly sent in. Do you have any knowledge or just 2nd hand reports of people chatting **** on internet fora?

All in all, kinda makes me wish I'd known about the 8€ 5Y option for my GT 1030 though!

Re: 1080Ti K|NGP|N or FTW3 Elite Gaming Black? Help me choose between these two cards...

I only know what I've read from other users. Hence my comment as to many of the 10-year warranty purchasers selling their cards to upgrade after a few years, which seems to be the most common outcome I googled. Any card they send back has to be equal or better performance, and EVGA will err on the side of performance. So that limits what they can send back if you send in flagship model cards.

Regarding the 8400 and other ancient hardware... surprising they are selling that stuff. Be aware not all of it meets the required -KR model. I wonder if it is a holdover from when EVGA was selling everything with lifetime warranties and they simply kept a lot of extra stock.

The only card I've personally warrantied from EVGA was a GTX 260 that was maybe a year old (I forgot why, errors or coil whine), and got a GTX 265 model back. My Titan Black was an OEM model with a puny 1-year warranty which had passed, but EVGA to their credit did attempt to fix it when I sent it in for repair. They repaired the VRM to get it to power up, but didn't charge me when the repair was deemed too costly to complete due to a partially fried memory chipset. Lastly my GTX 480 Hydro has never died or thrown errors despite its FTW overclock and insane power requirements, but it has a lifetime warranty so I run F@H on it to heat the kitchen in winter. :P

I never said you're guaranteed 2-3 upgrades, it's simply my opinion that if you buy a flagship card and use it for ten years, two is certainly reasonable. Particularly if the card is run 24/7 for folding, crunching, or mining. Again you're taking the gamble buying the warranty, if it was a surefire 3 upgrades EVGA wouldn't offer such a warranty program. But after having my GPU blow itself up after 2 years, having a guaranteed GPU replacement for the next ten years sounded fine by me so I took the gamble. I also happen to run my cards 24/7 Folding, gaming, or doing whatever. I also have moderate overclocks on them, so I've hedged my bets.
