Asus RX550-2G Loud as Hell

Thu Feb 01, 2018 1:00 am

This is a loud SOB. Talked to Asus today and they didn't have any answers for me. Ran their tweaking software and set silent, no change. Fairly certain the GPUs fan is running 100% from startup, being in Windows doesn't change it.

Anyone else tried these out? Have 4 of them in identical rigs, all brand new and all have the same issue of loud or sped up fans. Seems like a VBios issue.

Figured this was a small PSA for those grabbing cheaper GPUs for their Ryzen builds.

Try setting the fan to something low in the Radeon drivers and see what happens. Maybe it's just bad design and they are indeed very noisy. Although that would be a terrible decision on ASUS's part.

Is this the card:

If so, it does look like Asus has saved pennies by not connecting any sense/control wires to the fan (see the 4pin fan connector with only 2 wires).

You could splice a resistor into the fan wire to step down its voltage (there are guides if you google this).

I used one of these in a recent build. You're not going mad, there is no way to adjust the fan speed on this card.

Since I have to work in the same office, I ended up removing the fan, strapping a spare 120mm fan to the card in place of the original, and setting up some rules in Speedfan to ramp up the speed as necessary - I'm sure there are alternatives to Speedfan, if that's not your cup of tea.

I don't know this specific card so can't comment on that, but I have had issues with the fan speed control on other ASUS GFX cards as well.

Last year I bought a ASUS ROG STRIX-GTX1060-O6G-GAMING but I was not able to get the fan speed control to work properly. Seemed like it was a problem with the GFX card BIOS. It should be able to turn the fan off for low loads, e.g. while on the desktop, and while this worked right after booting the system, it was not able to turn down the fan again after having been running on high.

I tried all their SW tools and while I could see the temps go down close to ambient, the fans would stay at 100%. Only a reboot of the system would make them go silent again.
I ended up getting my money back and went back to my almost silent GTX760 (has no 0dB feature though) which I am still using today. With the current mining craze, I have no interest in upgrading my GTX760 right now as it handles most games quite well even in 2560x1440.

If you plan to use the card in a HTPC or office machine that will not do any 3D gaming, then perhaps you will be fine with permanently turning down the fan speed, e.g. using a register or manual fan speed controller?

I've always thought Asus did a pretty good job of implementing the CPU fan speed controls on their motherboards, even the cheaper ones. Sad that this apparently does not carry over to their budget GPUs.

I don't buy Asus graphics cards.

At the low-end you have inexcusable corner-cutting like this. They've ruined the user experience to save 10 cents.
At the high-end you have cards that are 30-50% more expensive than the competition, because RGBLED.
Congratulations, you've noticed that this year's signature is based on outdated internet memes; CLICK HERE NOW to experience this unforgettable phenomenon. This sentence is just filler and as irrelevant as my signature.

My current GPU is an Asus. It's a passively cooled GT 720. So no worries about fan noise there.

I'd definitely send that puppy back. I have inadvertently bought two GPUs in my lifetime that have had that problem (EVGA 9800GT 512MB and a 1GB GTX 650 from PNY I think it was) and both got returned. That's completely inexcusable.
I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.

If he sends it back he might not be able to afford he next step up. :(

True, but I figured he'd just get another RX 550. I'm also figuring (perhaps incorrectly) that he paid current prices so hopefully it wouldn't be much difference anyway.

But, uh, lots of assumptions there I suppose.

Yeeeep, I didn't even think to look at the fan wires, never assumed they would be so stupid as to include something like "IP5X Dust Resistance Fan" and then not have the ability to control the fan. Never in my life have I seen that.

Yeah I paid $109 for these IIRC. These bastards are going back and I'll pickup on another RX550 to replace them. I used some Gigabyte 550's not long ago that were flawless, just they were out of stock this time around. When it comes to video cards I always find myself using MSI as they typically have one of the better and quieter cooling solutions. Never impressed with the bang for buck on Asus cards, it just isn't there.

Side question: What is the typical noise level in Hell anyway...?

With all of the supposed screaming and agony, I'd presume fairly high.

Update:. I'm sending the noise back to hell, found those 550 Gigabyte cards were in stock and the same price. Bought 5 of them and sending these crappy cards back to Amazon.

I would imagine it to be quite loud. Many things are often said to be on fire in hell, and even relatively small fires pop and crack and can be loud at times. Large fires create their own air currents. High winds can be quite loud at times also.

Those replacement Gigabyte RX 550 are much more quite. In fact they are silent at idle! I noticed the Gigabyte fans are larger as well and have Gigabyte's little grooves in the fan blades to supposedly reduce sound. It of course helps that they have a fan controller.

Oh and for fun, I'm returning the Asus cards to Amazon in a Newegg box  Wonder what the odds are they will deny my return out of spite ahaha.

I've always wondered the same sort of thing, but I imagine it'd be pretty difficult to send something back in a state someone at amazon hasn't seen before. Having a bit of experience working with the warranty department at my last job I know it's surprisingly common for someone to send stuff back even if it's a destroyed, appalling, disgusting, wreck of a thing and think nothing of it.

So in that way, I'd say you're probably in the clear. :P

One of my co-workers bought a SFF bare-bones off Amazon recently. The motherboard had clearly been used and returned. Thermal compound all over the place, bent pins in the LGA socket. Needless to say, it wouldn't POST. They did exchange it for a good one, with minimal hassle.

The punch line is, I think he's decided not to use it anyway. His original plan was to use it for a DIY NAS, but he's decided he wants something with room for more hard drives...

Yeah I've never had any issue with returns to Amazon, they've been insanely good about it. However, they have been TERRIBLE about digital code emails being sent. Bought a bunch of Ryzen CPUs over the past few months and am due for no less than 2 codes for Quake Champions. I spent about 45 minutes on the phone with them a few days ago for my 3rd go around. After being transferred the 3rd time to a very rude "manager" who kept insisting I had to contact AMD, I decided to hang up. I'll have to call back when I get someone who speaks English and understands how their promotions work /sigh.

Not that those sort of codes don't get thrown around a lot in the enthusiast community, but I should probably give a code or two away. I have more than I can give away to friends. May I'll start up a giveaway or something.

Same crap here! I've justo bought an Asus RX550-2G to build a brand new AMD Ryzen 1600 with a Fractal Design Define Mini C, and the only sound (quite loud by the way) is from the Asus Graphics card, if I stop the fan with my finger...no other sounds or noise is hear....

Bad for Asus! So returning to Amazon now...

Does somebody confirm that the Gygabite RX550 is quiet?

thanks

I can confirm the Gigabyte cards that I replaced the loud Asus with is in fact quiet. They have 3 wires ran so they have a speed controller for the fan.

I'm sorry you didn't see the PSA I put up earlier about the card. So damn loud, it really is inexcusable on Asus' part.

It really is a shame because cards with such low power consumption don't even need fan control to be quiet, just a fan running at low speed all the time.
My experience with low end Asus cards has also been so and so. While their higher end products can be among the best, they seem to be cutting more corners than the competition in the low end.

Their low-end passively cooled ones have been decent, if a tad overpriced. The GPU in my main rig right now is an Asus fanless GT 720 (no gaming so performance is more than adequate even when driving 3 displays, and the Linux drivers are stable). Picked it up a few years ago on sale at Microcenter.

Too bad they're cheaping out on the fan controls on some of the current low-end cards. I've generally been impressed with the build quality and stability of their entry-level motherboards; sad to see that this level of quality does not extend to their GPUs.

I'm an Asus person pretty through and through... Using their SOHO routers, monitors, laptops, motherboards, ect. However in the video card market I don't often buy Asus, it seems they ask much more for not much more. MSI seems to be my go to almost always for video cards, even for the passively cooled stuff in the past. MSI made some amazingly well cooled passive stuff that I have working to this day in a server almost about to hit 10 years old (time for a replacement last this year). MSI is my second go to for motherboards, Gigabyte is last of the top tier. I think these Gigabyte GPUs are actually first Gigabyte cards I've ever bought oddly enough. Somehow I managed to pick another brand over all of these years.

Yes, I could have sent my noisy rx550gb back to reseller. Wish I'd found this thread before...! But finally I've frefered to follow some guides and play a little with a solder and those cheap parts. Now I can turn it down quite a lot and only hear the very much quieter cpu and psu fans.
