Kaby Lake G use of Vega questioned - no RPM

Mon Apr 09, 2018 1:29 pm

Interesting finding, Kaby Lake G doesn't seem to support Rapid Packed Math, leading Toms to question if it's not scaled up Polaris with HBM2, rather than scaled down Vega.

The real take-away from that article: If you think Kaby-G doesn't have Vega graphics because they turned off that feature, then we should have another thread about how AMD is apparently lying by claiming that Raven Ridge parts use "Vega" graphics too since the 2400G is clearly substantially slower than Kaby-G in the same test.

Just seems like an odd feature to disable, especially considering the Intel IGP supports RPM also. I can't imagine that disabling RPM saved any die space or power consumption..

The DX12 vs DX12.1 seems strange also....

Maybe we've forgotten something: Fine Wine(TM)!

They'll turn the feature on 6 months from now and we'll all be talking about what a miracle it is that the driver finally supports the feature that was in the silicon from the start.

No RPM? I can't wait to see how AMD tries to spin this.

The Intel side of this part is also a bit out of date (Krabby Kake instead of Coffee). I suspect that the nature of working together just meant that this part took longer to come out than a normal part from either company; co-ordinating everything must have added complexity.

Please, sir, explain to us what Coffee Lake CPU cores have that Kaby Lake doesn't. And no, I don't mean "more cores." I mean what features or structures does Coffee Lake have that Kaby doesn't? (hint, this should take you zero time)

Though I will concede your point that things like this take time. That's for sure.

I have read somewhere, I wish I could recall, that the Vega GPU in these packages have been "custom built" for this specific purpose. It's not just off-the-shelf Vega so it makes sense there are SOME changes.

AMD spin? Last I checked, all Kaby Lake parts were made and sold by Intel. If an Intel part is deemed to be "missing" a feature, I don't see how that's on AMD. It's up to Intel to know what they are buying.

FWIW, the "Vega" GPU in these parts isn't made by Intel. Surely they entered into an agreement as to what they're getting and they know what features it does and doesn't have, but they surely don't make the AMD GPU included in this part.

Intel doesn't make AMD GPUs. Thank you Captain Obvious

Well, he was talking about the AMD GPU. I'm not sure why you said what you said if you knew that Intel didn't make the GPU. Seems pretty clear to me.

Only questioning why AMD would be on the hook to make excuses (spin) for a product another company sells/markets?

It was a bad pun. No RPM? Trouble spinning? Get it?

I'll let myself out.

Yes, we got it [and by "we" I mean "not cynan"]

Nothing wrong with the pun IMO, but its presence is irrelevant. The now-pedantic point is that AMD had nothing to spin :) . The pun only works (or works better) if the company has something to spin. To me it would've been more apt if you'd said "No RMP. I can't wait to see how Intel tries to spin this." as it is an Intel product.

Edit: Chuckula is right. I totally missed it at first glance. But my pedantic point still stands!
