AMD FirePro W5100

Fri Apr 20, 2018 1:37 pm

Any thoughts on the value of this card to a general-purpose PC used occasionally for light gaming? It was rescued from e-Waste pickup this week. (Backstory: Our deployment image only supports Nvidia for various and sundry driver-related reasons, so PCs are generally ordered with the lowest default video card option checkmarked and then upgraded in the office.)

eBay says these things still go for around $200 on average, so either it must have some mining potential or it's good for some other use I can't think of just now. Thoughts?

What GCN generation are we talking here? Can you give us a rough estimate as to its consumer-grade equivalent?

I know nothing about this card, but here's the official link:

OK, this was definitely not a high-end part even when it was new. It's only using a 128-bit GDDR5 memory interface and has only 12 GCN compute units [AMD's old Kaveri APUs had up to 8 compute units so this isn't much bigger than the integrated graphics parts]. Furthermore it's stating to be running in < 75 watt envelope that's nice since you don't need an extra power connector but not a sign of high performance.

If you could sell it for $200 online, I'd jump at the chance since even with bloated GPU prices you can get something noticeably better for less than $200.

Incidentally your link says it has:
Discreet active cooling solution

At least it's quiet ;-)

Radeon 7790 re-branded to Radeon R7 260X it looks like. It's the second revision to GCN aka the GPU (Hawaii) used in the R9 290.

It would take you 2,363 continuous hours or 98 days,11 hours, and 35 minutes of gameplay to complete your Steam library.
In this time you could travel to Venus one time.

If that "GTX 460" on the chart means "Fermi" like I think it does, then I've already got one of those (almost 7yo at this point). So not a barn-burner. Guess the main thing this one would be good for is powering a video wall from a single slot.

It will be about as slow as a GT 1030. Good enough for casual titles.

At least it won't be short of memory. The 7790 shipped with only 1GB ram!

Professional series GPUs--Quadro and FirePro--carry a big price premium because their drivers are certified to work well with commercial grade workstation software like Solidworks, Siemens NX and Davinci Resolve. It's not generally a big deal for a hobbyist or freelancer, but it matters for large deployments so the HP/Dell/Lenovo corp models typically ship with one.

A W5100 isn't a particularly great GPU, cert stuff aside, but it might work okay in lieu of an entry level GPU. And it was free.

Ended up flipping it on eBay, went for $162+S/H, will net about $135 from the sale after fees. Definitely not my worst day ever, since that helps pay for some of the hardware costs I sunk to refurbish a couple laptops. In the meantime, that same rescue pile included an Asus card that turned out to be a 2GB R9-270. Since that was a definite upgrade from the ancient MSI Cyclone 460GTX that was in my desktop, I made the swap and so far it is running fine.
