GPU prices are still somewhat elevated due to the crypto mining craze, so getting a meaningful bump in performance is gonna cost you. Is there a particular reason you want to upgrade, given that you still think your existing GPU is "amazing"?
Nostalgia isn't what it used to be.

Not so on the GTX 1070 Ti. After the recent mining crash, those have fallen to earth rather abruptly, and retailers are having sales to clear stock.

And it just so happens the 1070 Ti is the cheapest product he can buy that will give a decent upgrade (around 50%).

+50% for $450 still doesn't seem like a great buy, though. GPUs just go through 50% gains too fast to be spending that kind of money every time they do - that's less than a typical generation's worth. A 1080 Ti is about the minimum I'd consider worth it on a perf/$ basis even if you have workloads that can put that much power to use, and having workloads that can put that much power to use is far from guaranteed. What resolution is your monitor, what framerate are you targeting, and what kinds of games do you play (or if you have other GPU-heavy workloads what are they)? Your CPU may also be a relevant factor.

In short, if your 980 still "works amazing", the best course for the moment is likely to stick with it. It is still a fine card.

I don't know why you all quote "amazing"

We at Ngreedia HQ would like to personally apologize for the fact that your card hasn't self-destructed on schedule. Our Intentionally Gimped Driver Program (TM) is sadly not what it used to be like it was in the glory days of Kepler.

However, now that the mining boom is over, we have a whole lot of Pascal stock that isn't selling, so please take your pick from any card that starts with a "10" so that we can get to the ones that start with "11" in September.

[Slightly more seriously: I'd wait until the 11 series is established before upgrading. The "1160" model or equivalent will probably be a reasonable upgrade from a GTX-980 (the "1180" model might end in "80" but I expect it to be more $$$).]

I recently managed to grab a 1080 for MSRP (499) as an upgrade to my 980. I'd say if you can spend that, and resell the 980 for 200-250 it might be worth it. Nvidia are supposed to drop new cards at some point though, so you may want to wait.
