*plunge 3.0* Bought a $999 2080 Ti

Mon Nov 26, 2018 8:55 pm

Welcome to the 3rd installment of my *plunge* series.

As some of you many know, I've been itching for a GPU upgrade but I've been pissed about state of 2080 Ti acquisition. I had two plans: 1) Go full stupid and buy an EVGA FTW3 2080 Ti Hybrid when they come out and have the most awesome 2080 Ti out there 2) Try and snag an EVGA 2080 Ti Black Edition when they come out and feel good about having the cheapest 2080 Ti out there

An hour or so ago, I discovered that my choices were a whichever-comes-first scenario. I got an email notification that the 2080 Ti Black Edition was in stock and I snagged one within ten minutes.

Image

Ten minutes later and they were out of stock. I'm pretty stoked I got the timing right! :o

In keeping with my cheapest possible theme, I resisted expedited shipping and went with the free option. No tax direct from EVGA either. I know it's not a good value, but it's the most value I can get from a bad value.

Now I just have to cross my fingers that it arrives by the weekend. :x

-just a great quote there for holiday shopping.

Hope it delivers even more than you expect from it! :D (..and that game developers get their game's DLSS "on".)

Memory cooling seems to be issue with Turing cards, i would suggest you install extra fan to cool this card.

I hope everything goes well with you but due to the date on which you bought your card, there *might be issues*. And no, I'm not trolling u.

Congrats! Wish these were available at launch. I bought a Founders Edition and put on an EK waterblock. Clocks to 2025/8000 stable. Great memory clock, mediocre core clock. I'm sure I could've gotten the same results with one of these and saved a couple hundred bucks. Oh well.

As awful as the value proposition may be, I don't think waiting would help.

Navi isn't a high-end solution and it's 6+ months away at least, and you can probably add another 6-12 months before AMD provide a high-end solution on top of that.
Turing's brand spanky new so likely to be a whole 18 month product cycle before Nvidia release anything more powerful on the consumer side.

Fish, you idiot! Now that you've bought a monster graphics card, are you going to buy a Swift PG27UQ to go with it?
Congratulations, you've noticed that this year's signature is based on outdated internet memes; CLICK HERE NOW to experience this unforgettable phenomenon. This sentence is just filler and as irrelevant as my signature.

4k is overrated. I say this as the owner of multiple 4k panels. You can't drive 4k at high refresh rates (in most games with highest settings), and once you go HRR/VRR you'll never go back.

Get this instead:

https://www.asus.com/us/ROG-Republic-Of ... FT-PG348Q/

I recently bought it and it's great. I tried high refresh rate with a cheap panel previously and the fluidity was nice but the panel was not. Great panel + HRR/VRR is a fantastic combination. Yes, it has "IPS bleed" but aside from scenarios with black bars at top and bottom (cutscenes/loading screens) it is not noticeable. I don't use PC monitors to watch movies, just for desktop productivity work and games so it really doesn't bother me.

If you can wait, newer models with HDR ought to be out in the next few months, though they should have been out already so maybe they'll just be cancelled.

"Value" is defined based on what one sees as worth. Then there's the aspect of time. Graphics cards are not progressing at the pace they used to. Given that, I don't think it's the worst value in the world.

Congrats Dr. Fish!

Before everyone kills me for what I'm about to say, I do have a 3440x1440 screen hooked up in the basement that I feel like I'll be able to use again with this new card. However, I'm still rocking this setup in the the living room and I've done 99.99% of my gaming on my 25" 2560x1080 monitor for the last couple years (via the 50' HDMI cable running down to the PC in basement).

I have no plans to change that. :D Any spare horsepower will be used via cranking up the DSR factor.

Well at least on that 1080p monitor you might be able to actually turn on raytracing...

For that kind of hardware, I think a new monitor is a must have--it would kick the crap out of a 3440X1440 (which is what I have with a GTX 1080 in a laptop). FWIW, the deals I've seen this year have been great. What games are gonna get the Turing test?

Heh, they may be true for games made by real professionals, but I play Ark and DayZ. :P Assuming a straight up doubling of performance vs. my 980 Ti, that's going to land the 2080 Ti around 70-90 FPS in Ark and 100-140 in DayZ with my current detail settings and pedestrian native resolution. However, there's a couple extra image quality boxes that I've been wanting to check in Ark, and I'd rather play DayZ at 2.25x DSR (3840x1620). I expect that DayZ will come in right around 60 FPS minimums with the souped up res.

Edit: Got an email about "preparing shipment" - looks like the order actually went through.

4K is still an idiot trap. I'd wait for the next wave of 1440P IPS monitors with higher native refresh rates, HDR, and various bells and whistles. Or the current wave, if you can snag something like the 120hz 3440x1440 Alienware or 165Hz 2560x1440 Asus/Acer at Black Friday prices.

Only if you care about high framerates. VRR makes lower framerates surprisingly tolerable. 4K really only makes sense for non-gaming usage patterns. The textures, UI and art for majority of the titles out there are optimized for 1080p.

Agreed. My ageing GTX970 runs 4K beautifully. It was a forced decision by the TV industry - 4K is now the default whether you like it or not and I just find that games look and run better at 4K native with settings turned down than at 1080p on a 4K screen with settings cranked up.

Many games now perform the dynamic resolution trick where the HUD/minimap/menus/inventory/whatever run at 4K but the game itself is running at 1440p or lower with upscaling and post-processing.

I'd still rather than I had a 1080p or 1440p TV because subpixel antialiasing is a big deal and you don't get that if you run at 1080p pixel-doubled on a 4K screen, but running at 4K native downsampling within the game engine works beautifully.

Obviously, all opinions are related to my own preferences. I game on a 100Hz IPS and can notice when the frame rate dips into the 60s in action titles, so fluidity is huge for me. I also have a budget 4K gaming TV that I've played controller games on and...I prefer the image quality and speed of 1440P. Games like the Witcher 3 just look better with a fat refresh rate and better settings than the extra resolution. If I was purely gaming 2560x1440xStrobing would be my weapon of choice, but I find UWS really nice for photo editing and other "productivity" applications. If someone came out with my dream 2560x1440 monitor I'd use two (one gaming one productivity) instead, but monitor manufacturers are pushing 4K and curved these days.
