RTings Tests Close to 60 Monitors for GSync Compatible VRR

For your reading pleasure. Useful resource to check if a monitor works well in GSync Compatible mode.

Interestingly, they had issues with screen tearing on all their monitors, even when testing Freesync with Radeon cards.

On all monitors, the screen would usually start tearing within 1-2 fps of the monitor's maximum refresh rate. The exact same behavior was observed when testing the monitors on an AMD Radeon card, and is caused by the refresh rate very briefly exceeding the display's maximum refresh rate.


I've not noticed this on any of my GSync displays, even when using ULMB, and definitely not when using GSync. It's also something I haven't seen mentioned in monitor reviews, so would be curious to know what that's about.

EDIT: Notably, they only tested VRR using the Pendulum demo, so what they're seeing may not be representative of actual game performance.

At the very least, it's nice to know that Nvidia's move to support Adaptive Sync over DisplayPort won't make these FreeSync monitors suck any more than they already do ;)

Lol, I have never seen screen tearing (or any issues) on my BenQ XL2730Z.

FreeSync is great, though adding it as a feature it doesn't stop sucky monitors from sucking.

I've always read that you should cap your refresh rate a few Hz below a FreeSync monitor's maximum FreeSync Hz. This is a known issue.

I can confirm this first-hand. It is actually an issue with VESA's adaptive sync in general. What is actually happening is that monitor is switching between out of range into adaptive range. It takes a fraction of second for the monitor to adjust but it is noticeable (tearing, shuddering) with rapid screen panning and motion on the screen. That's why you should should cap the framerate within the monitor's adaptive range. G-Sync 1.0 masks this problem within its proprietary module so the monitor never has to directly adjust. Thank goodness that both Nvidia and AMD RTG's current driver suite allow framerate ceiling and floor on the fly.

It is very minor problem that only happens if your GPU's performance threshold is going back and forth between out of range into adaptive range. If your GPU is consistently pumps a framerate that is far beyond the adaptive range or is unable to reach it. You'll never see in action. I just happened to come across this problem when fiddling around adaptive syncing with my RX Vega 64 and MG278 setup on some games/settings.

I guess that's why it got missed, there aren't many times that the settings won't put the framerate always below or always above the limit. Put like that, can almost give them a pass.
