AMD WattMan VRAM Timings (new)

Mon Feb 11, 2019 12:28 pm

Just noticed AMD WattMan has acquired a new feature: VRAM timing profiles - Auto (stock) - Level 1 - and Level 2.
Has anybody played around with this yet?

I chose Level 2 on my Undervolted RX480 and instantly saw a 6% increase in FPS using FurMark. Still need to test some games. Today, I'm testing what it does to my VRAM voltage setting to see if I need to add some juice. If all goes well, it seems like a nice way to get a 6% performance increase without cranking up core clocks and voltages.

Oh, neat! That'd be a nice little boost if it's stable across a wide range of tests.

Neat, seconded. I'm planning on installing 19.2.1 after tomorrow's Microsoft patches are done with, and will see if it's there on RX Vega 56 (as some options are different in WattMan between that card and my RX 580).

I did see that it now has a section called 'Tuning Control' with 4 choices -- 'Manual', 'Auto Undervolt GPU', 'Auto Overclock GPU', and 'Auto Overclock Memory' -- so I might play around with that as well.

Hopefully the issues with Radeon VII's and WattMan are resolved soon. I'm anxious to get to playing with my card when it arrives tomorrow!

Hopefully, it isn't a card that wasn't flashed with UEFI at the factory.

I run in CSM mode anyway, so lack of UEFI won't be a tripping point at least initially.

Can you see if it has a 'Tuning Control' section in WattMan or not? My RX Vega 56 has it, but my RX 580 does not.

FWIW:

The 'Auto Overclock Memory' does nothing I can discern.

The 'Auto Undervolt GPU' choice seems to put the chip down to bouncing around in the range 0.96-1.11 V, 135 to 150 W for 1468 to 1486 MHz
versus 1.00 to 1.16 V, 158 to 173 W, and 1483 to 1493 MHz in WattMan's Turbo mode.
(All figures from GPU-Z, IIRC my physical BIOS selector is for the lower-power secondary BIOS. Does the Radeon VII have that?)

I've not tested 'Auto Overclock GPU' yet.

I'll check on that. I hope to get to initial testing tonight. I don't believe there's a BIOS switch on the Radeon VII.

Memory timings are there (and yield a decent boost, 3.X% on initial benchmarks). Auto undervolt works out of the box, similar performance boost (it disables the memory tweak though).

I'll set up my watt meter by this weekend to compare profiles and ensure stability.

From what I've seen around the net, the Auto Undervolt is garbage (if it works at all). Slightly smaller sampling says Auto OC isn't that fantastic either. Seems you're MUCH better off doing those things manually.

My initial shot with auto-undervolt was successful, but it very quickly crashed playing a game. Definitely not an easy button except for *maybe* benchmarking quickly.

Yeah, instability is the #1 complaint in the Auto Undervolt comments. I think 100mV undervolt is a bit aggressive. From my experience, you can pull out about 50-60mV (below stock) at a given frequency and still be stable (for GloFo 14nm GPUs).

I ran Memory Timing Level 2 on F@H (best GPU test I've found) for 14 hours stable without having to adjust my RX480's 2000MHz/900mV VRAM setting.
I didn't do any exploration on lower VRAM voltage when I chose 900mV two years ago. I just picked it as a nice round number and tested it stable (got me down to Freq. State 4 for use with FRTC/Chill). Seems I had a little wiggle room left.

That may be true for Polaris, but I can undervolt my reference V64 Air by >100mV on the top two performance states without issue (1.01V and 1.06V for P6 and P7 versus 1.2V and 1.15V; normally runs around 1620MHz in games).

I had some strange things with my RX480. Sometimes Auto voltage would give it 1075mV@1305MHz and other times it was 1150mV. For that frequency, I was able to get 1020mV stable. So it probably depends on where your card starts as your reference to "stock" voltage.

I am gaming stable with 985 mV on my Vega 64, +50% power limit, and a -2% downclock.

I've rolled back to 18.12.1 drivers as the fan curve in the latest drivers are broken and abysmal. The maximum fan control works flawlessly so I don't know why they decided to change it. The new drivers feel like a 10 year old's attempt at his first programme. I run my Vega 64 air (bought on launch date for £449) at 980 on the HBM2 (that's the floor temp), and 990 and 1000 on P6 & P7. Temps are between 65 and 75 and I get a constant 1515 on the GPU with no throttling. Can't complain and by limiting the fans to 2700 rpm it's acceptably quiet when gaming with no horrendous ramping like the new fan curve does. AMD needs to ditch the fan curve or at the very least offer an option of the fan control or fan curve.

I ordered a Radeon VII on launch day on a whim but when I read the reviews about the noise and drivers I cancelled it before shipping and got my refund a couple of days later. Feels like I dodged a bullet there. Seriously AMD need to up their game (sorry about the pun) because now Nvidia support freesync I'm no longer tied to AMD's ecosystem.
