SUPER-duper: GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER, 2060 SUPER and 2080 not-so-SUPER

Wed Jun 26, 2019 1:51 pm

Is EVGA going to have to call their custom cards "SUPER Super-Clocked" now?

NVidia has confirmed that they will be launching a new RTX series of gaming graphics cards, called RTX SUPER, on July 2nd. According to info from VideoCardz, there will be three models of the new GPUs at launch - RTX 2060 SUPER, RTX 2070 SUPER and RTX 2080 SUPER. The review embargo will lift on the same day as launch day for RTX 2060 SUPER and RTX 2070 SUPER, but the embargo for RTX 2080 SUPER will prevail until "later in July". The embargo for custom cards based on the new SUPER GPUs will be delayed until July 9th, when we will get the first wave of new cards.

...so is "SUPER" or "Ti" higher? This is why these naming conventions are STUPID.

Nvidia is trying move excessive TU104 and TU106 stock. 2080 hasn't exactly been moving around due to its awkward position on the price/performance curve. Its current price point is the only reason AMD is even able risk to selling Radeon VII. The SUPER SKUs are be used as a upselling tactic while Nvidia does price cuts on the "old stock". This is typical behavior when your only competition is your old stock.

Pretty sure that's the implied meaning of the SSC suffix. So they're gonna have to go all out with the Super Duper Clocked version.

I'd be surprised if Nvidia doesn't actually end up naming them all "Ti" since many of the "Super" versions do in fact have more resources than their brethren and the only current "Ti" is the RTX2080Ti.

Pricing for the new GeForce cards has been revealed.

It sure hasn't taken long for NVidia's evil marketing geniuses to make their current generation of product names as confusing as their previous obfuscations. The new GeForce RTX2060 SUPER is a moderately cut-down Turing 106 with significantly less performance cuts and 2 GB more memory than than the same chip gets cut to in the RTX2060, but still with more cuts than Turing 106 chips get to go into the RTX2070.

You might expect that GeForce RTX2070 SUPER would be a flawless version of Turing 106 with nothing cut off, but that's not the case. RTX2070 SUPER is a cut-down version of the larger Turing 104 chip in RTX2080, while the new GeForce RTX2080 SUPER is the full-fat version of Turing 104 with nothing cut off.

As yet, there's no SUPER version of the Turing 102 chip found in GeForce RTX2080 Ti and Titan RTX.

That's only because Engineering forgot to cut enough off the 2080Tis T102 to make room for the 2080Ti Super.

TU102 will not see the "Super" moniker because the intact TU102 customer-tier SKUs is already being sold as Titan RTX. 2080Ti is the cut-down version and factory-overclocked SKUs make a "2080Ti Super" a pointless gesture. Besides, TU102 have been moving steadily for their tier. The entire "Super" moniker is nothing more than a marketing move to help move excessive TU104 and TU106 stocks.

https://www.techpowerup.com/256966/gefo ... -benchmark
As expected, the significant boost of going from a slightly-crippled Turing 106 to a crippled Turing 104 with an additional 2.8 billion transistors has made GeForce RTX2070 SUPER significantly faster than GeForce RTX2070, and it's enough to surpass the early FFXV benchmark results from Radeon RX 5700XT.

According to PCPer review, the $400 RTX2060 Super matches (and will purportedly replace) the $500 RTX2070.
I like that!!!

That's going to put a lot of pressure on Navi pricing. And with Nvidia supporting FreeSync now, we have the option to buy either brand.

I banged together a little spreadsheet using the values from the table at the bottom of page 1, here, to help me analyze where the new graphics cards were positioned.

For performance (shader operations per second):
GeForce RTX2060SUPER = RTX2070 << RTX2070SUPER < RTX2080 < RTX2080SUPER << RTX2080Ti

For value (shader operations per second per dollar):
GeForce RTX2070SUPER = RTX2060SUPER > RTX2080SUPER = RTX2070 > RTX2080 >> RTX2080Ti

For my target of 2560x1440 at >90 Hz variable refresh, GeForce RTX2070SUPER looks interesting.

2060 Super isn't replacing the 2070 though. The 2070 is a fully enabled TU106 chip and has overclocking headroom which does allow it distance itself from the 2060 Super. I suspect 2070 will undergo considerable factory overclocking from vendors to help sell itself. 2060 Super is just a TU106 with one of the CUDA and tensor blocks disabled but memory controller is intact with more aggressive boost clocking.

Since GeForce RTX2060SUPER matches the performance of the GeForce RTX2070 and it (officially) costs less, it should definitely replace it in the marketplace, unless prices on RTX2070 models are slashed significantly in the future.

2070 will probably get more clockspeed boost from vendors on par with 2060 Super clockspeeds (branding as 2070 SE/GT or such). It will outperform the 2060 Super, but it'll probably command a $50 premium over the 2060 Super's price point. It will be similar to the whole GTX460 768MiB and GTX 460 1GiB setup back in the day.
