Vega 64 or RX 5700

Sun Aug 04, 2019 2:45 pm

Would you guys recommend a Vega 64 for $300 (used but well maintained) or would you go for a full price RX 5700?

What monitor do you plan to drive with this card? Are you at all sensitive to the noise of the Vega64's cooling fan?

For my target resolution of 2560x1440 at 90 to 144 Hz, the Radeon RX 5700XT looks like a good choice.

For games, the 5700 non-XT. +$50 for generally faster, will probably further improve with drivers, much more power-efficient.
But I think they're still all with blower-style coolers, so I'd wait a few more weeks for open-air versions.

For non-games, more research needed. The Vega 64 might be faster.

I'd probably go 5700 as well -- but as Meerkt says, wait for the custom coolers to start shipping before buying one. All of the reviews I've seen like the 5700 as a card but hate the reference cooler.

Sorry guys, I should've said 300 CAD! (~220 USD), the prices for the 5700s are in the 500s to 600s CAD, so it was a very compelling sale to me!

Don't know then.
For games, maybe a used GF 1070? :)

If long term performance is more important, spring for the 5700.

If saving ~$300 CAD is more important, keep the cash in your pocket and get the Vega.

If you can get a Vega 64 for ~$220 US, that's a pretty good deal. Over the course of a couple years, you'll likely pay for some of the difference in your electric bill though.

I run bootcamp + macos, I really want an Nvidia GPU, but I'm stuck with AMD

I have a friend who had a Vega 64 and said it was far too hot and loud for him so he resold it.

That's kinda why I avoided them myself.

Picking up a 5700 XT shortly.

As long as you downvolt the Vega series, it’s pretty good. Clocked down 5% gives something like 25% less power and doesn’t noticeably affect performance.

Radeon RX Vega64 is noisy when gaming with the default voltage/power settings. How hot it is depends on how much cooling you're applying. My reference model runs between 65°C and 70° with the fan at 50% to 55% output. I intend to hold on to it at least until Navi 12 (Rumored to have 64 CU vs. the 40 CU of the Navi 10 in the Radeon RX 5700XT) arrives. If I am more patient, I will wait until AMD's Navi 23 or NVidia's 7nm Ampere GPUs (GeForce RTX 30xx) arrive next year before I upgrade. Intel's Xe purportedly will arrive next year, too.
