Radeon RX 5600 XT - Why would you buy one?

Wed Jan 22, 2020 7:50 am

With no raytracing support as of yet, why would anyone save $20 and go with the Radeon RX 5600 XT instead of the Geforce RTX 2060?

Some reasons I can think of:

    Fanboy
    Lower power/noise/GPU temperature
Significant performance advantage in favorite game
    Optimized compute workload

But to me, not supporting DXR just makes the 5600 XT inferior and a bad buying decision.

How about "2060 isn't powerful enough at RT to bother using it for that"?

I'm not anti-RT by any means, but really if you want to use it for anything other than a light demo you need a 2070 Super or better.

Without ray-tracing, Radeon RX 5600XT is significantly faster than GeForce RTX2060, uses less power than RTX2060 and costs less than RTX2060.

With ray-tracing, GeFirce RTX2060 is too slow to be usable. With Turing, you’ve got to spend kilo bucks to get usable ray-tracing performance. Hopefully, Ampere will make ray tracing more relevant,

As for what we'd recommend, we suggest GeForce RTX owners absolutely do drop the graphics settings down a notch to Medium in order to be able to enable ray tracing effects. From our experience with Control it is very much worth the hit to your frames per second in Remedy's Control.

If someone values raytracing eye candy, RTX 2060 is a better buy and not as slow as molasses. But then again, if you are sensitive to dips below 60fps, avoid the RTX 2060.

Citation needed on that one. Most of the reviews I've seen show them being in a dog fight rather than the 5600XT having a clear victory.

For example, in Anand's review which one is ahead depends on which game and resolution you look at.

Also, which vBIOS used in the benchmarks for the 5600XT?

They used both, fyi. Almost all the performance comes from the memory clock change.

"Meanwhile, I suspect AMD’s motive may be a bit more straightforward: beating the now-$299 RTX 2060. As it so happens, the factory overclocked Sapphire Pulse RX 5600 XT pulls ahead of NVIDIA’s reference RTX 2060 by 2% – which is essentially a wash in benchmark terms – but it allows AMD and its board partners to weave RTX 2060 performance into their product messaging. If AMD can position the RX 5600 XT as an RTX 2060 competitor rather than a GTX 1660 Ti competitor, then it’s all the better for them"

To be clear, I would not buy a 5600xt over a 2060 ko, especially at current pricing. At current prices in this order of purchasing, it would look like

5700
2060
5600xt

in the actual below 250 category

1660 Super

card I wouldn't even consider

1660 ti, since the 1660 super came out it's pretty much useless

This video card is in this slot to do the following:

1. It is a method to get rid of flawed 5700/5700XT GPU's that did not make the cut.
2.This card is slotted in the $299.99 price range. It was supposed to be in the 279.99 at launch then AMD changed their mind. This was done to keep the 5700/5700XT at their higher price levels. Because....

I bought my Dell, VisionTek 5700 at 279.99 last month. Yes I bought a NEW 5700 at 279.99 and a 5700XT for $329.00 for testing purposes. The prices were going down since launch but instead of being the AMD of old they have taken a page right out of Nvidia's playbook and "priced" the 5600XT at that level. I would not buy this lobotomized video card.

Expect more of this type of pricing and product placement in the future. Not good for the consumer.

ADDED: As of this posting I found 1 or 2 on Ebay for $279.99 but most so far are going at the $299.99 But even at the $280 range you are still losing out on Memory and speed.

The real question is why buy the 2060 when the 5700 exists

The MSI Evoke 5700 is $295 after promo code and MIR right now. Certainly not the best cooler by any means, but that's treading awful close to 5600XT prices.

Do you need the best web hosting reddit?
The best proxies are on reddit.
Take a look at the best hardware wallets Reddit has to offer.

Oh and if you need password management, check out 1password reviews on reddit.

Certainly not the best cooler by any means, but that's treading awful close to 5600XT prices. Has anyone tried NordVPN? People love it on Reddit's best VPN thread.

Definitely thinking about one now..

It boggles the mind how AMD manages to stay competitive despite missing a pretty big feature like raytracing in their current line-up. I swear AMD is waiting for consoles to be released first so they don't dampen their "It's got raytracing!" hype  Microsoft and Sony, release your damn consoles already or F you both!

Ray tracing just isn't the killer feature, yet, that Nvidia hoped.

No thanks to AMD's lack of hardware support giving game developers the pause. Why go to the trouble of implementing something that a sizeable portion of their audience won't be able to experience?

This is true of any new tech and that doesn't matter if Nvidia, AMD, or both companies latest cards support a feature. The volume of good enough last generation cards with overall performance improvement did not justify the cost of the 20XX cards for most people.

Also the first generation cards typically have only passable support for the new tech (with limited software to run) and second generation is when you should consider moving.

I expect NVidia's Ampere and AMD's Radeon RX Gamma to have much better support for ray-tracing towards the end of this year than Turing does today. Plus, they'll be fabricated using advanced lithography process nodes (enabling more transistors for less power). Oh, by the way, both Sony and Microsoft are bringing out new consoles with similar features in the same time frame. That's a lot of factors to give ray-tracing a boost. Even so, it's still difficult for developers to spend the time and money necessary to develop for a new feature if the old stuff is "good enough". Software usually seems to be 1½ to 2 years behind in taking advantage of new hardware features.

Admittedly it's all rumours at this point (so definitely don't bet the farm on it), but the scuttlebutt sez Ampere is going to have 2 - 3 times the ray tracing performance Turing did. And when Turing came out, Lisa Su basically said that AMD intended to support ray tracing but not until it was ready.

My take on it is Turing ray tracing is more in the tech-demo phase than production ready. I wouldn't blame anyone for ignoring it as a reason to buy a card. Ampere and RDNA2 are where it (hopefully) will go from being a side show curiosity to actually being worthwhile.
