So I had to swap out my GTX 970 for my older GTX 760.

Wed Aug 26, 2020 12:51 pm

Over the weekend I got fed up with my GTX 970 losing the signal to my display every time I to play games that use 3D. Mind you the Card kept doing even with games that don't stress dGPUs at all. So I become tired of this, so I just swapped out the component with the one I kept after I upgraded back in Dec 2015. It started doing this earlier this Year with Window games using Steam's Proton, and now Linux Native games.

The games I'm currently playing don't have any issues at all on the 760, but I also spent extra for getting one with 4GB of video memory instead of 2 in 2013. So there is that.

So I am sort of in the market for a new dGPU... I'm also giving heavy consideration for AMD Radeon Cards as Linux perform has greatly improved since 2017 and the fact the drivers are Free and Open Source while Nvidia's are Proprietary.

I think the Nvidia drivers still work better overall.

Well I have been using Nvidia's dGPUs since Aug 2000 since I did my first build back then.

Any issues with MSI products? I'm looking at this video card:
https://www.newegg.com/msi-radeon-rx-56 ... 6814137554

Any problems with buying stuff from Newegg since they got sold to a Chinese Company? Not sure if their were secrtiny concerns or issues with Customer Service.

MSI's generally fine. Personally I prefer Asus, but they can be a little more $.

NVIDIA all the way on Linux, I'm afraid, unless you're religious about only using Free / non-proprietry software. AMD can be tolerable on Linux, but can also be annoying.

IME ASUS can be bad on quality and terrible on support, while EVGA is the best by far.

If you have a working solution for now and are looking to buy a NVIDIA GPU but it doesn't have to be right now, wait: NVIDIA's next generation launch window opens in 4 days 21 hours, see https://www.nvidia.com/en-gb/geforce/special-event/ - prices on current-gen 2000-series and last-gen 1000-series will drop over the coming weeks, both for new-in-box and for second-hand cards.

Just to be clear, we're suggesting using the Nvidia binary drivers for Linux, not Nouveau. The Nouveau driver is still somewhat half-baked, and AMD's drivers (whether binary or FOSS) are typical of AMD drivers, with everything that implies.

The Nvidia binary drivers aren't perfect either, but you'll have a lot fewer "WTF just happened?!??" moments with them.

Well according to the Users on the Manjaro Forum, AMD FOSS drivers are a Huge Improvement over what came before. And yes I'm well aware that you guys are suggesting using the proprietary Nvidia Drivers, and not Nouveau. That FOSS driver is only worth using with much older cards no longer supported by the Company.

Sort of, on the AMD front, depends on the card though. And the Free NVIDIA drivers definitely aren't worth anything, they have a negative value greater than the cost of replacing the old cards (at work, we literally pull and replace old cards when support from the propriertry drivers is dropped).

I wouldn't be so optimistic about any huge drops, as the lack of competition at the high end means NVDA has been able to raise the ceiling on high-end cards. The latest rumour is a more reasonable 1400, but a couple weeks ago we were hearing 2000 being bandied about. Not a lot of room for the 2xxx series to go down with how the prices are stacking up. Also we don't know how much inventory is NVDA keeping on the older stuff.
