what have I done to my 9800!!???

Thu Mar 02, 2006 1:23 pm

Hi there,

I have a spare asus 9800xt vid card that I put into my brothers old dell (p4 1.6, 1gb ram etc...) it has been running for about a month, and I have not really checked up on it until yesterday. Yesterday my brother said that his computer was freezing during games and it would require a re-boot. I opened the asus monitoring utility for the vid card and it said teh card was at 102 celsius and could be damaged (When I removed the card from the motherboard the copper heatsinks burned my hand)
My question is..is it likely that the card is severely damaged? also the monitoring utility said that the fans were not functioning properly. I sit difficult to replace teh fans on the card.

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

I wouldn't be surprised at all if it works perfectly fine with a new fan. GPUs can handle a lot more heat than CPUs can.

Sounds like either heat or PSU (it's a Dell).

Is the GPU fan spinning?
Adding another case fan to a Dell case may be a bit of a challenge, buy he may need it.

The fans on the vid card are spining, and they look/sound just fine when spinning. I checked the case, and there are not any available areas for a new fan. I saw a solution at a computer store that may work though. It is a fan card that fits into a PCI slot, and has two fans on it, I could place it directly behind the vid card, and the fans would be blowing directly on the back of the card. Do those fan PCI cards work?

thanks again,

Sounds more like the card gets OCed if the fan is working. Nothing else in the computer but the GPU itself can make so much localized heat.

Dells typically have no cooling for anything other than the CPU and allow other components to fry themselves. If you could get your hands on an Arctic Cooling fan, then you would no longer have any problem.

B.T.W., most times those PCI fans are not very effective.

Hi,

So just last night I plugged the card back in and the fans were not spinning, the card works fine but the fans seem to be completely dead. What is the easiest solution for replacing the fans? They are the stock Asus 9800 fans.

Also, I am pretty sure it is still under warranty so I may just RMA it. The only problem is that it was originally an asus 9800 pro and I flashed it to an XT...I just checked Asus's website, and they did not have a bios flash program for the radeon 9800 pro, I only found one for the 9800XT...

Thanks again!

Vid Card Cooling

Wed Mar 08, 2006 2:27 pm

Look for an Arctic Cooling ATI Silencer fan for the vid card. It has a nice big fan, very quiet, and ducting to exhaust heat out the back of the computer. It is a two slot solution, but if you have the extra room, it sounds like an ideal solution.

This is what I did. Bought the cooler from newegg for about $35 + Shipping. Best investment EvAr!. I can send you my stock 9800 Pro fan if you want, but as hot as my pro got, no way would I trust it when I flashed it to XT speeds.

Didn't you back-up the original BIOS (you better have!)? Just re-flash the original.

Did you try plugging it in to another MB fan header just in case the header the vid card is connected to is faulty and maybe not the fans?
Just a thought..

It was originally on some dell 250W PS, I recently picked up a new antec 350w, again though the fans don't pin up(I have made sure it not a connection issue) Im going to go out and buy that arctic cooler fan for the 9800. I found a computer store in my area that sells it for $46 CDN. (thanks Justice for offering your stock 9800 fan)

Thanks again for everyone help

If that is an older Dell, its a good thing you didnt hook up the antec psu to it. Dell's older models are propriatary which wont work with the standard atx models. If you smell smoke..its upgrade time

Well it is an older dell..uses pc133 ram....I did hook up the PS to the computer. It seems to be working fine. The main connector from the PS to the MB was too large, but it still fits and appears to be working normally. IS this something that I shouldn't be doing?

If its working obviously its ok..the newer Dells arent a problem and will use other makers of PSU's, but their earlier ones were wired differnently and a "normal" atx psu would burn up the mobo and/or cpu.

I bought a ATI Silencer 3 yesterday. I tried installing it today, and all was good until I attempted to put the power connector form the ATI Silencer 3 to the vid card... the power connector on the silencer had the same number of pins, but the actual connector was much larger and wouldn;t fit into the slot on the graphics card...i made sure i bougfh the one for the 9800....any suggestions? is it because it is an Asus 9800?

Plug it into a fan power connector on the motherboard?

Yes, either connect it to a fan header (or adapter) or replace the end of the cable with the one from the original fan.

I look on the motherboard and there was no connector for the fan. There was a connector coming out of the PS that looked exactly like the one coming out of the Ati silencer though. What kind of adapter do you mean?
