My 5970 arrives today!

Tue Dec 08, 2009 12:43 pm

The lady just got me a surprise Sapphire 5970 OC "mangagement" present that should be arriving today. I am really exicted to test it out. I know that not many games will even scrape the edge of this card's epic power, but in the future it is sure to be put through the paces. After we get the house this Spring (hopefully) I plan to try to acquire 2 more monitors to deck out this Eyefinity thing they are touting. Are there any new models, off the tops of your collective heads, that i should be looking at 4-5 months down the line? I know that i can just do the research myself but i am at work and my lunch break is only so long. Also since it is the holiday season the weekends are filled with various shopping trips, grinding future wife rep(i guess she would be a new faction), house shopping, and Xmas parties, i am not going to have that much time to do the finer points of tech research. Thanks in advance.

-Love and Peace

Why not just get a 50"-60" HDTV? I imagine it would be more immersive than an EyeFinity setup.

I'd guess you'll enjoy that- should pretty much shred every game you throw at it. Time for some monster AA settings on a single monitor. Congrats! :D

Keep in mind one of the 3 monitors will need to support displayport for eyefininty.

Otherwise, yeah I'm not up on the latest monitor models. I'm still waiting for OLED to take off (which will be awhile).

I think a 50" - 60" HDTV would be a tad more expensive then 2 or even 3 decent monitors. Plus I figure it would absolutely overrun most computer desks.

Because an HDTV can "only" do 1920x1080. That card is begging for 3x 2560x1440 or something similar.

Depends on what you're getting. Three 24" IPS monitors will cost you over $1200 while a decent 120Hz 52" LCD will cost you about the same. The 1080p resolution still looks quite nice even up close and the card's power at that resolution won't seem as wasted as new, more demanding games come out. But if you were looking to put this on a computer desk, I hear ya'. Not that three 24" monitors will fit easily on a desk, but a 52" TV is a little too much. Maybe a 32", 37"or 42"? I'm just thinking about all the Triple-head promises and games of the past that never materialized. It would be a shame to spend all that money on three good monitors and end up only using one of them for 98% of what's out there. Plus, you would have no borders in your visual field which is what sells one large monitor for me.

And they do make 32" 1080p televisions. Here's a Samsung LN32B640 1080p 120Hz for $750 shipped. (Take 5%-10% off of that with Bing cashback). Worse comes to worse, you can use it as a backup TV. Something to think about.

If I had to choose the best of all worlds, I'd simply settle for a 30" monitor, but that costs almost double what that 32" TV costs and you can't use it as a TV unless you get an ATSC/QAM tuner card. Depends on what you're willing to put up with (borders for me are unacceptable) and how much you're willing to spend.

A 30" 2560x1600 monitor matches well with a couple of 20" 1200x1600 monitors (rotated) to match the dot pitch and line things up.

I've only got 3/4 of the setup shown in that image.

Besides pushing ridiculous numbers of pixels, another good use for the 5970 is supersampling AA. This should improve IQ a lot in games where MSSA can't remove all the jaggies.

Which, as we've know since 3Dfx invented the stuff, blurs textures too. It will certainly help in some places, but there are trade-offs to all forms of AA :). And aside from Eyefinity, I really can't see a use for these cards either- 30" monitors would be close.

That is a sick setup...now only if the edges of the monitors were smaller (bezels?)

Hi,

I was wondering if you tried it , because I bought a 5970 but it won't work on my asus M3A79-T motherboard .

I tried everything to get it working :
-I changed my power supply.
-I tried it in another computer and it works.

And so I tought , maybe it is the motherboard

My computer : Asus M3A79T deluxe + AMD Phenom 9950 + Antec TruePower 1000W
