Lets look at the time table for my most recent cards:
$569.99 for my 8800 GTX on 3/22/07
$497.09 for my 5870 Toxic on 4/18/10
$649.99 for my GTX 780 on 5/23/13

I feel pretty decent about that as an every three year upgrade. I know the 7970GE is a better value for most but I don't care about the games (I'll get them on Steam for $10 in a few months if ever) and I'm just a little fed up with AMD graphics side (huge fan of their APUs though). I also think nvidia has a clearer plan for the future, especially for streaming gaming content which is really appealing to me (maybe not Shield specifically so much though). At any rate...

Congrats! enjoy it; it looks to be a beast. More than I want to spend, but if you can spring for it, it looks pretty dang quick. Especially for your giant-monitor desires.

This might be asking for trouble but along with its benchmark prowess the GTX 780 has a surprisingly high WAF.

I'm going to follow your lead on this once EVGA releases their Classified model of the 780.

At £500+ it's a waste of money. If it was priced at around £350 I'd be all over it. Obviously Nvidia are eeking out the biggest margin they can for the this high end card. I'm sure AMD would do the same.

I'll just wait until the next gen comes along and maybe replace my 7950 with a 8950 or whatever if the price point is right. Nothing really taxes my 7950 at 1080p so why waste my money. I might even wait another generation who knows LOL.

For the money Nvidia are charging you will be able to buy a PS4 or Xbox One and still have change to buy a couple of good new game releases. I've never owned a console but if NVidia and AMD keep price gouging their high end cards I might just have a rethink.

At these silly price points PC gaming may be on its last legs.

Yeah, if I already had a 7950 I wouldn't bite either. As it is there's always something better coming you just gotta choose when it's the right time for you. Mine will be powering a 1440p display so that helps justify it to me as well. Also, the Wii U is the only console I will need for this generation - I already have a HTPC.

Also, Lordhawkwind, there are plenty of really, really nice mid-range cards out there, lots of options for all budgets, hardly a sign of PC gaming's demise... ...but let's not kill the thread with that discussion anyway - I don't want this one locked too.

Not really. Most Titans will do 1100-1150Mhz on the stock cooler; mine's a little better than average. ^^

Requires a BIOS flash of course.

As for the person saying you can get a xbox one or a ps4....was not worth even bringing that up since we have a long wait still Plus we have to wait to see what they both do! Sports games is the only place console's shine..maybe fighting games too.
But when it comes to sports games like hockey, baseball, basketball, football, soccer, etc......these new consoles are going to rock.
I really hope with all those CPU cores they have great AI for computer opponents and computer teammate control!

I was surprised by how well the 7970 keeps up with the newer drivers. Perhaps it's time to update mine and cross my fingers that CCC doesn't break again.

I would have limited to 7950 or 670Ti. 780Ti has poor-value and is marginally better than Titan at price/performance ratio.

Shame that Nvidia didn't attempt to make 780Ti go for $499-$549 price point where it would have stir-up the high-end market, but that would have cannibalized their Titan sales.

Congrats on the purchase, Titan on a diet sounds like a nice addition to any rig. Still a tad expensive for a single chip GPU but relative to other cards on the market it's price can be argued given it's performance. Would have been nice to see it closer to the 680's price but hopefully it will drop a hundred bucks in the not so distant future. Would be nice to see AMD can release anything to put some downward pressure on the price, but I wouldn't hold my breath for that.

I'm going to be putting one of my GTX 670's into my secondary rig soon and fear I will be lacking GPU power... considering selling 1 670 to subsidize a 780 purchase, but part of me wants to save my money and wait until Maxwell. It could be a while though. Decisions, decisions.

That was the real reason I wanted the Titan after all.

670Ti has far better value and price/performance ratio than 780ti, 680ti and Titan. It can effortlessly handle 2Megapxiel gaming with AA/AF and 4Megapixel w/o AA/AF on current titles. It can manage AA/AF with 4Megapixels under older stuff.

You realize there's no such thing as a "670Ti", right? Besides, not everyone is concerned solely with value and price/performance; if we were, we'd all be running Radeons right now.

670 and 680 only have 256-bit memory; that's crippling when you want to make use of SSAA, which is basically the only kind of AA I'm satisfied with.

I'd say this is the true flagship gamer card. The titan is higher but the extra capabiities aren't of much use to a gamer who would be better off going SLI if they want to spend $1000 or more. I might actually go for this one myself, but I'd rather go for a non-reference design with better cooling for overclocking. I also plan to wait a bit more for the price to drop; I'm not in that much of a hurry as I will be doing a brand new build from scratch later this year.

Coincidentally, I know a pretty popular Twitch.tv streamer who changed from GTX690 to 780 a few days ago... He plays multiple PC games every week and he said today that he is happy that he can finally play most games without stutter.

Notice I said if they want to spend $1000 or more. If I had the budget to be spending that much on a titan, it would make much more sense to spend the extra $300 and get two 780s instead. Or better yet, save the difference and wait for Maxwell or Volta which will probably blow away titan with a 670 class GPU.

Well balls...

Installed my GTX 780 and was greeted with a POST code indicating trouble initiating the GPU. No big deal, looks like my motherboard has a number of BIOS updates that "Improved VGA card compatibility" so I grab the latest one, go though all the normal stuff and then, uh oh, fans spin up for a second then stop, then start, then stop, loopy-loopy. Crap! For the first time in 18 years of flashing motherboard BIOSes I brick one! Looks like a combination of carelessness on my part and not the greatest of warnings on MSI's part did me in - and I am not the first. I had no idea you could flash a 1155 mobo and make it incompatible with Sandy (Intel ME 7 vs. 8 was involved as well). The specifics of my failure also mean that even if I swap in an Ivy it still won't work (I know, I tried). I got concerned when in the middle of the update there was a progress bar indicating my backup BIOS was being flashed as well.

So this morning I'm off to the local rip-off shop to see if I can score a suitable 1155 motherboard and salvage my 3-day weekend of gaming bliss...

On the plus side it looks/feels amazing...

So I went shopping this morning, the local place only had $200 LGA 1156 boards so that didn't help. Luckily a place in GR had something acceptable so I am now the proud owner of an Asrock Z77 Pro4 - and it only cost me about $30 more that waiting for NewEgg to send it to me next week. So far so good, just barely got everything back together.

Nice shots drfish, the 780 looks absolutely beautiful. Hopefully now with a new mobo underneath, you can give it a flogging over the weekend! I'm completely sold on the look at on-paper performance of the new nVidia stock coolers, can't wai to get on in-hand for a play. What resolution are you using this at? Also, just to sate my curiosity, that fan on your roof - is that a SilenX or something? I used to run those in an old CoolerMaster Ammo (yes, I know) 939 build, and they were pretty damn nice fans. Just thought I recognised the dull pewter paintjob!

We're not quite as lucky as you guys are with pricing on this side of the pond, unfortunately. GTX 780s are running high-700s to low-800s currently, and I knew this was where I had to aim for 2560x1600. I had a nice Gainward unit lined up on eBay last night, at AU$769 (the cheapest) and was ready to drop the hammer, when I found a guy selling his GTX 690 for 800 bones too. Had four hours to go so I put 900 bones on it (I'm coming from an HD 6990 and am a bit of a sucker for CF/SLI on-a-stick), ended up picking it up for 810. Bit excited to get my new piece of kit myself!

Congrats on the new GPU, fellow 780-owner . I'm still amazed how well-behaved that cooler is ... Oh, and I'm still running an Ultra-120 too .

Yup. I just moved from a pair of 670s to a single 780 on my 1400p screen and it's so much better!
