Has the litecoin bubble finally burst?

The difficulty of Litecoin mining is at an all time high and looking to go higher still, while prices haven't really risen enough to compensate for that, so it ends up not being profitable anymore unless you have very cheap electricity. Combined with DOGE and many of the other alt-coins being in the dumps as well, I can see how this has caused GPU prices to drop again. And then there's the announcement of ASICs, one from a reputable company promising very high hashrate/power ratios making it less attractive to mine with GPUs.

I'm gonna put a question because I'm not really interested in doing up a whole thread on it.

I don't know if it's because of the increase in difficulty of litecoin going above the hash rate (spring breeze has been canceled this year in favour of radeon breeze), coupled with the press, and the rumblings of asics, or if it's just the vendors not wanting to shoot themselves in the foot, maybe, with high prices over the springtime upgrade season, but now that the prices on radeon have come down somewhat, I am looking at it again.

My question relates to a few of the radeons that have dropped in price. Right now there is a good sale on a budget r9 270x. it's a single-fan shorter-length cooler setup. But there are triple fan cards now at prices which are closer to normal. I think about next year, or even this year, and 20nm. And it makes me wonder about getting a card now. I thought to just get a 750ti to tide me over until 20nm, but I don't like the performance for it. The power consumption is nice though. The budget r9, however, is at a pricepoint where it would make a good tide-over card.

That budget r9 270x is sadly lacking a review and I wanted to ask if it really makes a difference when you're talking about the smaller-cooler versions vs. the larger cooler ones. Does it really matter? Stock overclocks never amount to much in terms of extra performance. Or at least they didn't in recent memory before the 750ti. What would you do? with 20nm looming ahead the coming months, get the cheaper 270x on sale or spend more money on a triple fan 270x? I know I'm not being helpful at all by not linking the actual cards, but it seems like every time you see something mentioned in some kind of enthusiast site, you look again and it's either sold out or something's changed. Bit silly but that is how it seems at times. You can probably figure out exactly what cards I'm talking about.

So that's what I'm asking. At low tdp cards, does a triple slot cooler really matter so much? With 20nm coming out next year, is it just not worth it to buy the more expensive one? And I know "it's just a 270x". But I have declared a budget and I'm not messing with it.

Bonus question. When do the largest springtime sales come around? Next month?

If you can wait until 20 nm GPUs arrive at the end of the year, then now is a good time to wait. If you need a new GPU right now, then you have to select among the graphics cards available right now to get the one that best meets your performance requirements and budget.

This thread was started because of the price run-up that happened with Radeon graphics cards (especially those based on Hawaii and Tahiti GPUs) during the litecoin mining bubble.

Radeon R9-270X is a faster version of R9-270 which is an updated version of Radeon HD7870. These cards use the full Curacao/Pitcairn XT GPU which is noticeably more powerful than the Pitcairn Pro GPU that has 1/5th (20%) of its shaders disabled in the Radeon R7-265 / HD7850.
At as little as $182, Radeon R9-270 provides a good gaming experience at 1080p. Radeon R9-270 has much better gaming performance than the similarly-priced GeForce GTX750Ti.

Radeon R9-280 is an updated version of Radeon HD7950 Boost which is a faster Radeon HD7950. These cards use a Tahiti Pro GPU that has 1/8th (12½%) of the shaders disabled from the full Tahiti XT GPU that's found in the Radeon R9-280X / HD7970.
At $295 and up, prices still haven't fully recovered from the litecoin bubble. These cards were a phenomenal value when they were selling for as little as $200 last summer. When the litecoin mining fad started gobbling up all of the available supply in November 2013, Newegg jacked up prices higher than a GeForce GTX770 / GTX680, making those NVidia GK104 based cards a better value for gamers.

Radeon R9-290 uses a Hawaii Pro GPU that has 1/11th (9%) of the shaders disabled from the Hawaii XT GPU that's found in the Radeon R9-290X.
At $465 and falling, prices are still above the $400 MSRP with which these cards launched at the beginning of November, but they've come down tremendously from the $780 height of Newegg's price-gouging when the litecoin bubble was at its peak.

yeah I know but I figured it was related enough that I could put it here. don't want to make another thread about it until right before I buy when I put the obligatory thread in sba.

it's good that the prices have started to level though. I wouldn't have figured it would happen so soon. TRcoin could save it!

Radeon R9-290 is down to $446 at Newegg today. That's only $40 more than they charged me for the exact same card in November.

There's a Newegg link in the previous post.

To my knowledge, Newegg has never priced the Radeon R9-290 below the $399.99 + $5.99 shipping = $405.98 that they charged in November. Today's price of $409.99 is within 1% of that mark. I'm calling that close enough to declare the price-gouging bubble burst.

It's still quite inflated in Canada.

When I clicked that link yesterday it was 469.
Not sure if Newegg detects that I just got a raise and therefore increases the prices for me?

I do see 410 today, though. However, it's only the one HIS card at that prices and has the AMD design cooler which I wouldn't want.

Newegg appears to be clearing out the models with the AMD reference cooler and discontinuing them. The Sapphire and HIS cards from earlier in the week are both gone now. Today, Newegg's lowest price for Radeon R9-290 is $440 for the XFX R9-290A-EDFD, which has a dual-fan cooler.

I am just glad I didn't need a video card this last year. Hopefully by the time the new cards come out the prices will be more normal and the litecoin fad will be over.
